AS awareness of the economic and environmental need for efficient water resource management grows, so too does the mining industry’s requirement for groundwater-savvy professionals.
This has driven a demand for professional groundwater industry training, particularly in the area of practical water science.
The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) is seeking to meet demand with its training program. Led by training manager Joanne Barbaro, the program recognises a need for water professionals to maintain a solid foundation of scientific understanding.
Ms Barbaro said the need could not be understated, particularly in the mining sector where new technologies were concerned.
“Whether you are an engineer working on site or a manager involved in planning, having general knowledge of the science behind what you are doing is vital,” she said.
“Not only does it give you a greater understanding of the real-life impacts of your work, it provides you with a foundation from which you can make better planning and management decisions.”
Driven by an obvious gap in the market, the NCGRT team has started tailoring its training programs to suit the needs of particular industry groups, or even particular organisations, offering specialised science-based courses.
