WA’s premier construction and mining event, the biennial Construction and Mining Expo (CME) returns to Perth from March 15 to 17, at Sandalford Estate in the Swan Valley. CME 2012 will showcase about 120 exhibitors across more than 16,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor exhibition space. An estimated 4000 industry professionals from across Australia are expected to attend this year’s event, from a broad range of industries including: construction; mining; electrical; telecommunications and cabling; sewer, water and gas management; engineering; landscaping; recruitment; training and professional services; and public works.
Latest innovations CME 2012 will offer attendees an opportunity to view and compare the latest equipment; explore the newest products and innovations in the industry; and watch action-packed machinery demonstrations in job-like conditions. Attendees can experience first-hand equipment in action: working at ground level, underground and overhead. Exhibitors at CME 2012 include the Construction and Mining Equipment Industry Group WA, WesTrac, Coates Hire, DIGGA West, Contatore Engineering, Toyota Material Handling and many more. A major exhibitor at previous CME events, Komatsu will again be on show at
CME 2012, displaying its equipment and customer support services. “We will be introducing the new Komatsu Hybrid Excavator range to WA and also displaying other Komatsu premium earthmoving equipment, which is again unique and unrivalled in terms of quality and performance,” Komatsu Construction and Utility sales manager – western region Colin Brindle said. “We feel the CME expo is the most appropriate forum to showcase our services in both mining and civil industries.”
Hitachi Construction Machinery is another repeat exhibitor, having participated in the 2008 event. “We found [CME] to be a well-organised event and there was a constant flow of customers from all industries through the stand,” Hitachi Construction Machinery construction equipment sales manager WA Perry Maxwell said. “It is very pleasing to have an expo of this calibre in Perth and from the results we achieved in 2008, we are very much looking forward to CME 2012.”
A focus on education and training CME always places a strong focus on training, apprenticeships and recruitment, and invites industry experts in these fields to both exhibit and attend. CME 2012 will focus on education, training and recruitment, and will feature learning opportunities with leading industry experts on the latest safety, regulatory, operational and technological issues affecting the construction, mining and allied industries.
CME 2012 will also feature a special program on March 16 – Apprenticeship, Training and Recruitment Day – where national organisation WorldSkills Australia’s Try’aSkill interactive program will allows visitors to try various skills and trades. The Try’aSkill displays are entertaining and informative,
and offer access to some of the basic skills involved in range of fields. David Wirrpanda and members of the David Wirrpanda Foundation will also be on hand, and visitors have the chance to win lunch with Mr Wirrpanda.
Apprentices in the construction, mining and allied industries, students from those industries, and students in year 9 or above who are considering a career in those industries, are invited to attend Apprenticeship, Training and Recruitment Day at CME 2012. There will be apprentices on hand to speak to visitors about their apprenticeship, and how to apply for one. Human resources experts will be on site on the day to offer advice on the many potential careers available in the construction, mining and allied industries, and recruitment agencies will be taking applications. Events of special interest The CME 2012 program features a number of special events that may be of interest to participants:
- The opening breakfast on Thursday, March 15 will play host to Energy, Training and Workforce Development and Indigenous Affairs minister Peter Collier. It will also include an address by special guest speaker, world land speed record holder Rosco Mcglashan.
- On Friday, March 16, former West Coast Eagles star David Wirrpanda will speak at the CME 2012 gala luncheon.

Sandalford is a 25-minute drive from Perth, and shuttle busses will run between the venue and Perth CBD, Perth airport and Guildford train station at regular intervals. Admission to CME 2012 is free for trade visitors who register online prior to the event. Admission is $20 for visitors who don’t register online.
