Layher: Delivering new innovations and possibilities in scaffolding for over 75 years

Industrial sites pose a number of risks including working at heights. Understanding these risks and protecting your people requires implementing appropriate safeguards, particularly when conducting maintenance activities and new projects onsite. It’s therefore no surprise that scaffolding has become an essential factor in the planning and execution of scheduled maintenance and outages.

As the world leader in scaffold design, manufacture and distribution, Layher has embodied innovation, quality and reliability since 1945. The pioneering spirit of the company’s founder, Wilhelm Layher, has seen the company evolve into a global player with a footprint spanning 80 countries. This includes a branch network across Australia and New Zealand that stocks a wide product range coupled with excellent technical advice and design support.

German made and precision manufactured to the highest industry standards, Layher’s scaffolding technology continues to set the standard in performance and reliability. Its scaffolding and temporary access solutions are trusted by the mining, construction, energy and manufacturing industries for a range of industrial, infrastructure, commercial, residential applications.

The Allround Lightweight range is renowned for its significant weight savings over other systems in the market, which ensures every tonne of Layher equipment provides up to 40 percent more working platforms than other systems alike.

According to Layher Australia managing director, Brad Leggett, the company’s heritage in advancing scaffolding technology has been key to its success.

“We’re driven to develop the most competitive product and service portfolio in the market, from both a quality and innovative perspective. Our new systems such as the Aluminium FlexBeam and TwixBeam have proven incredibly valuable for onshore and offshore applications” says Leggett.

“It’s about lowering total project cost through labour savings due to lighter and more efficient products. When coupled with the LayPLAN range of software including 3D images, Virtual Reality design and onsite scanning, our clients receive a greater return on investment due to the longer working life and higher resale value on Layher products.”

“We understand the demands of the modern worksite continue to evolve. So we’ve designed solutions that can be configured to meet specific scaffolding configurations and site requirements. We’ve also designed systems that eliminate the need for working at heights by crane-handling prebuilt structures in place”.

Launched in 1974, the company’s original Allround Scaffolding System exemplifies over 75 years of R&D in innovative scaffold design. The product is not only lighter and stronger, but is engineered for faster installation to minimise downtime and maintain project continuity, saving time and money.

Leggett highlighted several benefits of their unique scaffolding system.

“Our scaffolding system is designed to suit everything from working platforms, propping, bridges, stair access and mobile scaffolds, to roofs, protection solutions, stages and grandstands.”

“Aside from improved productivity, it is incredibly light and we’ve reduced the number of components such as decks, ledgers and braces. This means scaffolding structures can be assembled far quicker.”

Versatility is another stand-out feature of the scaffolding system. The modular, easy-to-use and fast assembly times can be attributed to Layher’s ingenious rosette connector. The rosette can safely and securely accommodate up to eight individual connections at a single node point.

“The rosettes are welded to each standard at 0.5m vertical intervals,” says Leggett. “Four smaller openings in the rosette automatically centre each ledger at right angles, making the scaffold square, while four larger openings allow diagonal braces and other components to connect at a variety of angles.

“This is why the system can be assembled using less components as the foundation for almost a limitless number of applications, which enables faster builds, reduced transport costs, and improved margins.”

Layher takes pride in the manufacturing process with a strict focus on tight tolerances. This prevents any unnecessary delays or product defects, so clients receive quality products when and where they need them. A full range of optional safety components and tools are available, making Layher’s scaffolding system the safest on the market.

The company’s clients also benefit from access to a team technical design specialists and resources. “We have a dedicated team based in Sydney and Perth with extensive experience in scaffolding design and calculation, project planning and logistics,” says Leggett.

“We have successfully delivered scaffolding solutions to some of Australia’s largest and most complex projects. When it comes to detailed technical designs, our LayPLAN scaffold design software provides a significant advantage to designers, scaffolders and tradespeople looking for a quick and efficient way to deliver their scaffolding quotes and projects.”

In 2022, Layher celebrated 20 years of operation in Australia. A series of client events were held in the each of the Layher locations in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

The future looks just as exciting for users of Layher products. The new plant 3 in Germany will be officially opened in November 2023, doubling its galvanizing capacity, which is currently at 170,000 tonnes annually. Additionally, a new Perth based facility is soon to be constructed with a larger warehouse and storage facility as well as display structures and client training rooms.
