THE development and expansion of WA’s mining industry has highlighted a growing concern for storage structures to
comply with cyclone rating requirements.
In particular, there is an increasing demand for liquid storage tanks to meet the requirements of Region D, Category 2 cyclonic wind loadings as detailed in AS1170.
Tanks West storage tanks have a proven record in this regard, having survived the strong winds of cyclone Vance on Thevenard Island in 1999.
In conjunction with Deacon Engineers, Tanks West has developed a restraint system using a circumferential band around the tank connected to galvanised SHS uprights that can be bolted to the tank plinth. The system successfully restrains tanks in severe cyclonic conditions and only protrudes 220mm from the line of the vessel.
The system’s circumferential band, fitted with its clevis plates for attaching the posts, is pre-installed during manufacture, minimising on-site work.
All Tanks West tanks are manufactured using the latest advanced resin and laminate technology systems, ensuring they are non-corrosive, impact resistant and suitable for harsh environments with high ambient temperatures. A comprehensive range of ANSI 150, NPT and BSP fittings are available to suit project requirements, along with certified Hydrostatic and load testing services.

The company has provided a number of storage solutions to Barrow Island’s A Class reserve including wastewater, potable water and reverse osmosis by-product storage tanks. Tanks West has applied its expertise to a number of major projects: it supplied reverse osmosis tanks to Rio Tinto’s Newman operation; water tanks for in-pit facilities in Tom Price; FMR process tanks at the Frog’s Leg gold mine in Kalgoorlie; safety shower tanks at the Jabiru base metal project in Leonora; process tanks at Newmont’s Tanami operations; and facilities at the Karratha LNG plant and the Pluto LNG project.
