Thiess has significantly expanded since its beginnings 90 years ago.

On April 16, 1934, small farming and roadworks company Thiess Bros began operating in rural Australia and 90 years later the company has grown across seven countries and three continents.

In its first year of operations, Thiess successfully tendered for the Kilkivan roadworks job and in 1939 the company was commissioned to complete the excavation work required for the Luna Park entertainment venue at Bowen Hills.

In the 40s, Thiess expanded into coal mining with the Heifer Creek cutting, marking a pivotal period of growth for the company, while in the 50s Thiess expanded globally, pioneering in dam construction and reclaiming land.

The 60s saw Thiess lead large-scale projects, venture into international markets and diversify into coal exports.

During the 2010s, Thiess implemented autonomous systems and was awarded its first autonomy contract to provide support services to Fortescue’s Solomon mine in WA. In 2018 Thiess was awarded another contract with Fortescue to install autonomous haulage system technology at the Christmas Creek operation.

Thiess is now continuing to expand its offerings, implement the newest in technological innovation and uphold sustainable practices.

Thiess executive chair and chief executive Michael Wright reflected on the company’s history.

“Since 1934, Thiess has remained focussed on delivering great value to our clients, continually improving and evolving, driven by our pioneering spirit to pursue new opportunities across industries and geographies,” he said.

“Throughout our 90 years of operations, we have challenged norms, created opportunities from change and have always moved forward.

“We will continue to transform our business and leverage our founders’ pioneering spirit to innovate sustainable solutions for a brighter tomorrow, for our people, our clients and communities.”
