Established in 1990, Excess Power Equipment (EPE) is an Australian owned and locally operated company. EPE provides specialist high voltage electrical equipment encompassing the supply, manufacture and construction of products and services throughout Australia and overseas.

The team at EPE understand the individual needs of clients operating within the region and provides tailored solutions to meet every expectation.

Today, EPE’s facilities encompass about 12,500m², consolidated in Maddington, WA, hosting an extensive range including transformers, both for sale and hire, kiosks, mining substations, skids, switchgear, new and refined transformer oils (Mineral and Ester Fluid).

New equipment supply

EPE stocks and supplies a range of new products, including transformers and transportable substations, all of which can be fully customisable with ring main units (RMU), transformers and low voltage switchboards (LVSB).

Hire and supply of stock refurbished power equipment

EPE has an extensive range of quality refurbished power and distribution transformers available to meet clients’ immediate needs. All transformers are fully overhauled before dispatch and come with a 12-month warranty as if they were new!

At any given time, EPE maintains a stock of around 300 transformers with the ability to deliver reliable solutions in a fraction of the time it takes to manufacture new equipment.

Transformer services

Not only a supplier, EPE offers repair and overhaul services for operating transformers. The team also specialises in modification and improvement services which include upgrading protection instruments and ester fluid retro-filling.

EPE has the capability to conduct electrical and oil testing in-house. With the unique local ability to fully test to the requirements of AS 60076.1 and AS 60076.3 in their new test facilities; EPE provides clients with a service that they believe is second to none when it comes to transformer verification.

WesTrac field service technician Leon Archibald was crowned runner-up in the Caterpillar Global Dealership Technician Challenge in the US.The global competition was first introduced in 2024 to recognise the critical role technicians play in keeping major industries operating, while also showcasing the world-class technical skills across Caterpillar’s global dealer network.Held over three days in Illinois, the challenge tested finalists through a series of high-pressure, real-world scenarios — requiring them to diagnose and repair complex mechanical faults under strict time limits.Mr Archibald, from WA, says the experience was both challenging and rewarding.“It’s been a long process, nearly two years, so to go through all that and get that result is amazing,” he said.“I didn’t think there’d be anything like this , you meet a lot more people and become more widely known.“It’s hard to explain the exact feeling of a podium finish, but it was great.”The result follows Mr Archibald’s standout performance at the semi-finals held in Spain last year, where he placed first against elite technicians from across Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East, securing his spot in the final.Mr Archibald was supported by mentor Peter Bardwell, who helped prepare him for the intensity of the international competition.Mr Bardwell says Mr Archibald’s calm approach on the global stage was the key to his success.“Leon is extremely determined and his technical knowledge is by far the best I’ve seen,” he said.“He was able to shake off some minor things that didn’t quite go our way.“It was such a privilege for me to join him in his journey to success. Queensland research maps movements and behaviours of black-throated finch

Queensland researchers have mapped the habitat and movements of the black-throated finch in a never-before-seen level of detail, as part of Bravus Mining and Resources commitment to managing the environment. The findings are the latest from a five-year joint research program between Bravus Mining and Resources and researchers from ecology consultancy E2M and have been published in the peer-reviewed and highly respected international scientific journal PLOS One. Bravus blooms little green thumbs in Bowen community

The Bowen Rail Company (BRC) is supporting the Queensland region’s littlest green thumbs through a grant to the Queens Beach State School kitchen garden program. The Bowen state school was one of four recipients of the latest round of funding from BRC’s Community Partnership Program, designed to assist not-for-profit organisations and community groups with the purchase of small assets that can make a big difference. Fenix Resources (ASX: FEX) is bracing its Mid-West operations in WA for the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Narelle and diesel fuel delivery uncertainty linked to global supply constraints.The combined impact of weather disruption and constrained fuel supply could affect mining and haulage activities for Fenix. To manage the situation, the company is scaling back non-essential operations while prioritising processing and haulage.The Bureau of Meteorology has indicated the cyclone could impact the Gascoyne Coast before tracking south through the Mid-West, prompting the Mid-West Port Authority to activate cyclone response procedures which will temporarily close all shipping operations at Geraldton Port.Fenix expects to maintain sufficient fuel supplies in the near-term, supported by existing stockpiles, allowing the miner to continue to process and haul iron ore to the port of Geraldton.Despite these current challenges, Fenix has maintained its FY26 guidance of 4.2-4.8mt of iron ore sales at a C1 cash cost of $70-$80/wmt on the expectation the port operations recommence in early April 2026 and diesel fuel supply conditions stabilise.Fenix said it does not intend to revise its guidance at this stage, as the underlying assumptions for its three-year production plan and Weld Range development strategy remain unchanged.

Fortescue removes high-risk rodenticides from operations

Fortescue has removed second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARS) from its operations, in a move to reduce risks to native wildlife, including threatened species such as the Northern Quoll. The change was implemented in August 2025 with Fortescue transitioning to alternative rodent control methods including first generation rodenticides, which break down more quickly in the environment. Rodent management remains a requirement at mining operations to protect infrastructure and the health and safety of personnel. SGARs are known to persist in the environment and can accumulate in animals that consume poisoned rodents, increasing the risk of secondary poisoning in predators and scavengers. Fortescue approvals, communities and services director Rosli Wheelock said the decision was made following internal assessment of environmental risks. “We operate in some of Australia’s most important natural habitats, and we have a responsibility to look after them,” he said. “When we saw these products could put native wildlife at risk, we made the decision to stop using them and have moved to safer alternatives.” Recent studies have identified anticoagulant rodenticides in a range of Australian wildlife species, raising broader concerns about their environmental impact. Edith Cowan University Associate Professor Robert Davis says second-generation rodenticides are highly persistent and can accumulate through the food chain. “Reducing their use where practical can help lower the risk of secondary poisoning for native predators and scavengers,” he said. Fortescue says it will continue to monitor and review rodent management practices as part of its broader environmental management program.

Macmahon Holdings (ASX: MAH) is partnering with Manuka Resources (ASX: MKR) for the restart of mining operations at the Wonawinta silver project in NSW.The agreement covers open pit mining services, drill and blast and load and haul activities with mining expected to recommence in May 2026.A formal mining services agreement is anticipated to be finalised in April, with an estimated value of $190m across an initial five-year term.Macmahon has said no additional capital expenditure is required for FY26, with company guidance remaining unchanged.The Wonawinta project, located in the Cobar Basin, last operated in 2015 before being placed in care and maintenance due to low silver prices.Manuka Resources acquired the project in 2016 and has since intermittently used the site’s processing plant for gold from its nearby Mt Boppy operation.The project was returned to care and maintenance in early 2024.Macmahon managing director and chief executive Michael Finnegan welcomes the opportunity to partner with Manuka Resources to de-risk operations at Wonawinta.“Macmahon is proud to be working in partnership with Manuka Resources to get this exciting large-scale silver project into production again” he said.“We look forward to working closely with them to deliver the operational flexibility and scalability that supports Manuka’s development timetables and production targets.”
