A mother’s mission to end workplace complacency

A mother’s mission to end workplace complacency

In 2019, Patrizia Cassaniti endured something no parent should ever experience.

Just four days after his eighteenth birthday, Christopher Cassaniti went to work and never came home. Patrizia’s son was working on a construction site in Sydney when a nine-storey scaffold collapsed on top of him — an incident that never should have happened.

Christopher’s young life had barely begun. His death was tragic and completely preventable.

SafeWork NSW found that, in the months leading up to the devastating incident, the scaffold has been gradually dismantled and, in at least three weeks prior to the incident, no inspections were performed.

The scaffold, which at the time was about 30m high and bore a load of almost 19t, collapsed on April 1 2019 — crushing Christopher.

As Christopher lay dying beneath the rubble, he was heard calling for his mother.

No job is worth a life

Patrizia transformed this unimaginable loss of her son into a lifelong commitment to ensure no family ever experiences the same devastation. Through surviving such profound loss came a determination to ensure Christopher’s life and legacy would protect others.

Patrizia’s work in workplace health and safety is deeply personal, driven by her mission to shift complacent mindsets and empower workers to always speak up.

Through tireless advocacy, education and leadership, Patrizia has become one of Australia’s most respected voices in workplace safety, challenging complacency, amplifying worker voices and reminding industry that safety is, at its core, about people.

Patrizia works to ensure these stories are heard and that change happens, not just in policy, but in everyday workplace decisions. A ‘she’ll be right’ mindset is not acceptable and workers should never be expected to just ‘tough it out’.

Workplace safety is not optional and complacency has devastating consequences. Every worker deserves the certainty that they will return home safely to their family after every single shift.

Let’s Talk About Safety

Safety must always come before productivity or profit. Every decision carries real human consequences. Policies matter, but culture is shaped by leadership.

Tragedy often occurs not because systems fail, but because of a human decision made in a moment of complacency or stress.

When people feel respected, heard and valued, they become the strongest drivers of safety. Engagement builds trust. Trust builds accountability. Accountability builds safer workplaces.

Today, Patrizia is one of the most powerful voices in workplace safety, challenging complacency, championing law reform and giving workers the courage to speak up without fear.

Her story is not easy to hear, but her mission is to save lives in honour of her son — who paid the ultimate price because of workplace complacency.

Real impact

Patrizia delivers unforgettable safety talks that shift workplace safety culture and saves lives — one site at a time.

With raw honesty, heartfelt delivery and unmatched authenticity, Patrizia’s presentations hit home — from job sites to boardrooms and expos to forums.

Patrizia has delivered emotionally charged safety talks at sites across Australia and the globe. She takes workers on a visual journey with an in-depth reenactment and footage of what occurred on that fateful day.

During a shutdown at a Glencore site in NSW, Patrizia took workers on a three-day journey through the reality of what tragedy looks like when complacency overrides safety adherence.

At a BHP site in WA, Patrizia encouraged and strengthened worker perspective on safety culture and how important it is to recognise complacency.

Tailored for construction, manufacturing, high risk workplaces, mining and engineering, Patrizia’s talks are known for provoking real change in mindset and safety culture.

A head of safety officer says Patrizia has single handedly changed workplace safety culture for the better at their sites.

“I have worked in the OHS industry for over 25 years in senior safety leadership roles and never come across anyone as dedicated, passionate and impactful as Patrizia,” they said.

“Despite suffering the terrible loss of her much loved son in a tragic workplace incident, she has somehow found the strength and courage to stand up in front of strangers on a daily basis and share her deeply personal story in the hope of preventing anyone experiencing the same unimaginable loss.”
