Rebuilt to outlast

Rebuilds are a strategic investment in machine lifecycles, representing only one phase in a much longer journey.

If a rebuild is executed poorly, it can lead to significant downtime, further cost and reduced productivity as the machine struggles to return to its intended performance level.

However, when a rebuild is completed correctly, the machine comes back to work and performs as expected, delivering strong productivity and extending the asset’s useful life.

At Hastings Deering Mackay the goal is always to ensure that rebuilds support machine operational goals and to prevent additional risk or cost.

Collaboration between OEMs and the customer is vital in major rebuild programs. OEMs are uniquely positioned to ensure that the key lifecycle drivers — total cost of ownership, machine availability, cost per tonne and long?term asset performance — are embedded into every stage of the project.

While planning and executing the rebuilds are important milestones, the real value is only realised when the trucks return to work and perform reliably. Strong collaboration ensures that both parties remain aligned on quality, timelines, expectations and financial outcomes, reducing risk and maximising the return on investment for the customer.

Hastings Deering delivers large?scale, complex rebuild programs successfully while maintaining strong customer alignment.

Large-scale rebuild for Jellinbah

Hastings Deering Mackay showcased its strength by successfully delivering a large scale rebuild program for 19 Cat 793F SSP and RBT trucks for Jellinbah coal mine.

A key challenge of this program was the requirement to complete the rebuilds within a 24-month period. Hastings Deering was one of several providers considered; however, given the complexity and scale of the program, Hastings Deering emerged as the clear choice.

The scope was extensive and required tight coordination between transport, workshop scheduling, parts availability, and rebuild sequencing to ensure each unit was delivered on time and to the expected standard.

The full scope of the project was delivered on time across two years, reinforcing Hastings Deering’s position as a trusted business partner rather than a simple service provider.

It also highlights the team’s capacity to manage the inevitable challenges that arise in projects of this nature. The way the team works through the issues collaboratively with the customer to ensured the best possible outcome.

A collaborative approach

Collaboration with Jellinbah was essential and occurred at every stage of the project.

Prior to the work commencing, Hastings Deering spent considerable time negotiating the scope and pricing of the project to ensure that the customer received genuine value for money and that the rebuild plan aligned with their operational strategy.

Project timelines were also developed in partnership to minimise downtime and ensure quality expectations were agreed upon so the trucks returned to work with minimal rework.

The collaboration continued throughout the projects entirety with regular quality checks, joint inspections and open communication around emerging risks or schedule pressures.

Each machine was transported from the site to Hastings Deering’s workshop in Mackay, where the dealership undertook the complete rebuilds. This included component overhauls, structural work and all associated quality assurance processes required to return the trucks to site in production?ready condition.

Post?delivery, Hastings Deering continued working with Jellinbah to ensure a smooth transition back into production and confirmed that the quality standards set at the beginning of the project were being achieved in the field.

“Hastings Deering’s documentation processes and weekly project updates enabled this effectively,” a Jellinbah spokesperson said.

“As the first machines progressed through the program, numerous reviews were conducted to continually refine the scope and eliminate gaps. This extended through to pre-delivery inspections conducted jointly by Jellinbah and Hastings Deering personnel.

“The program also required coordination with several third-party vendors, and Hastings Deering successfully incorporated these additional requirements into their planning and managed the associated works on Jellinbah’s behalf.”

Since returning to the field, the rebuilt machines have consistently performed to more than 95% capacity. Jellinbah has reported that machine availability is currently tracking on par with pre-rebuild performance and is exceeding Jellinbah’s monthly targets.

Jellinbah maintains very high standards for maintenance practices and machine presentation,” a Jellinbah spokesperson said.

“The condition of the machines upon return met our expectations and aligned with our internal standards.

The Mackay workshop team and Jellinbah’s product support representative did an excellent job coordinating all aspects of the rebuild program.

“Despite several issues outside their direct control, the team remained flexible, accommodating, and transparent, maintaining clear and open communication throughout.”

Hastings Deering remains at the forefront of mining technology. As the sector continues to evolve, Hastings Deering evolves with it.
