For the past eight years, GeoQ has built its business around independently verifying the quality and integrity of geosynthetic containment systems. Operating nationally, the company provides geosynthetic construction quality assurance (CQA), electrical leak detection (ELD) and onsite destructive seam testing for the mining industry. 

The need for that scrutiny is becoming more pronounced as Australia’s mining sector expands and critical minerals projects bring new infrastructure online. Containment systems represent significant investments, and a defect that goes undetected during construction can become a costly problem down the track. 

GeoQ’s role is to identify those issues before they become problems. 

One of the company’s longest-running projects is at the Talison lithium mine in WA, where GeoQ has provided independent quality assurance services for the construction of tailings storage facilities since 2023. 

The scale of the work illustrates why visual inspection alone is not enough. GeoQ has carried out electrical leak detection across more than one million square metres of bituminous geomembrane (BGM), identifying defects that may otherwise have remained hidden. 

Where leak paths are detected, they are mapped, repaired and retested, creating a documented process that provides greater confidence in the integrity of the finished containment system. 

Through a strategic partnership with Australian Geotechnical  Technical Service (AGT), TRI environmental, GeoQ now facilitates NATA-accredited on-site geotechnical soil testing and geosynthetic destructive testing labs. Bringing this capability directly to site means seam compliance can be assessed within hours rather than waiting days for offsite laboratory results.  

Across GeoQ’s broader CQA work, the company operates alongside engineering consultants and installation contractors, independently reviewing engineering records, seam testing results, material conformance and installation documentation. The objective is not simply to generate paperwork, but to create a reliable record of how a critical asset was constructed and whether it meets the required standards. 

“We’ve always believed that quality assurance works best when it is genuinely independent,” says GeoQ Director Nick Morris, who was recently appointed as the President of the Australasian chapter of the International Association of Geosynthetic Installers (IAGI).  

“We’re not part of the installation contractor or the design consultant,” he said.  

“Our role is to independently verify the work and give every stakeholder confidence in the final product.” 

That independence is increasingly important as mining infrastructure becomes more complex and the consequences of failure become harder to ignore. 

GeoQ has invested in specialist equipment, trained personnel and field-based testing capabilities designed to identify defects early and provide construction teams with timely information. Its combination of ELD, destructive seam testing and CQA provides several layers of verification across the construction process. 

For an industry increasingly focused on building bigger, longer lasting and more technically demanding containment systems, that scrutiny is becoming less of an optional extra and more of a fundamental part of responsible construction.
