Bowen High students unlock ‘export level’ at Abbot Point

Abbot Point Operations (APO) has taken a group of Bowen State High School students on a deep dive into the operations of Australia’s most northern deepwater export port. The year seven students participated in a two-day learning experience at Bowen’s North Queensland Export Terminal (NQXT) gaining a fascinating insight into the stages of resources production and learning how the terminal plays a vital part in the pit-to-port process. The learnings from the site tour were then applied at a school ‘Pit to Port’ workshop delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council. There were plenty of thrills and a couple of spills as Bowen Rail Company and Collinsville residents celebrated the official opening of the Queensland town’s eagerly anticipated $300,000 ‘pump’ bike track. Located in Darcy Munro Park, the Collinsville pump track is designed for skateboarders, bike and scooter riders to make their way over a series of rollers, jumps and berms by generating momentum through up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing. Bowen Rail Company fully-funded the $300,000 cost for the first stage of the circuit as part of a 2019 Infrastructure Access Agreement signed with Whitsunday Regional Council for the construction of the Carmichael Rail Network. Bravus upcycles mine tech for seriously ill children

Bravus Mining and Resources is upcycling tech from retired trucks and diggers from its central Queensland Carmichael coal mine to help regional Queensland families doing it tough. Bravus head of production and site senior executive Glen Corfield said that more than fifty state-of-the-art tablets no longer needed for mining operations have been upcycled to support the work of Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia and the Salvation Army. The initiative is a collaboration between Bravus and Haultrux, a mining technology and change management business. $1b Olive Downs coal mine officially opens

Pembroke Resources’ $1b Olive Downs coal mine has officially opened in Queensland and a $1m fund has been unveiled. Located in the coal-rich Bowen Basin, Olive Downs includes major infrastructure including a coal handling and preparation plant, rail spur, train load-out facility, coal conveyor, stockpiles, electrical transmission lines, water pipeline and access roads. More than 700 people were employed during construction of the project and an operational workforce is expected to peak at 1000 during production. GOLD production fell by at least 40,000oz during the third quarter, largely as a result of strike action at AngloGold Ashanti’s operations in South Africa, where the miner began laying off workers at one of its holdings. AngloGold’s output for the quarter ended September 30 was 1.03 million ounces of gold, well below its guidance of between 1.07moz and 1.10moz. Unit total cash costs were previously forecast at between US$835 and US$865 per ounce, but the company said lower production would impact these figures. Meanwhile, AngloGold began letting go of workers at its West Wits operations at the same time as employees at three other mines at Vaal River ended their industrial actions. A possible configuration for the combined system proposed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers. By Samantha James RESEARCHERS at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed a hybrid system that could boost efficiency of coal-powered plants and simultaneously cut emissions in half. The proposed hybrid system – designed by MIT doctoral student Katherine Ong and Professor Ahmed Ghoniem – could generate as much as twice the fuel-to-electricity efficiency of conventional coal-fired plants. This would mean a 50 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions for a given amount of power produced.
