Bowen Rail Company is revving up as the new naming rights sponsor of the Whitsunday’s favourite event, the 2024 Don River Dash off-road race. The Don River Dash 300 is a two-day off-road race that sees motorbikes, buggies and trophy trucks tackle a rugged “desert style” course through the dry riverbed of Bowen’s famous Don River. The event injects more than $4m into the local economy as thousands of competitors and motorsport enthusiasts from across Australia descend on Bowen and the Whitsundays each September. Bowen’s Cyclones netballers have swapped their bibs for aprons thanks to a Bowen Rail Company (BRC) community grant to refurbish their canteen kitchen and keep their club on track. Bowen Netball Association was one of four grant recipients in the latest round of Bowen Rail Company’s Community Partnership Program, which supports local not-for-profit organisations and community groups with the purchase of small assets that can make a big difference. Queensland research maps movements and behaviours of black-throated finch

Queensland researchers have mapped the habitat and movements of the black-throated finch in a never-before-seen level of detail, as part of Bravus Mining and Resources commitment to managing the environment. The findings are the latest from a five-year joint research program between Bravus Mining and Resources and researchers from ecology consultancy E2M and have been published in the peer-reviewed and highly respected international scientific journal PLOS One. Collinsville kids ride high at Bowen Rail Company-funded ‘pump’ bike track

There were plenty of thrills and a couple of spills as Bowen Rail Company and Collinsville residents celebrated the official opening of the Queensland town’s eagerly anticipated $300,000 ‘pump’ bike track. Located in Darcy Munro Park, the Collinsville pump track is designed for skateboarders, bike and scooter riders to make their way over a series of rollers, jumps and berms by generating momentum through up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing. Bowen Rail Company fully-funded the $300,000 cost for the first stage of the circuit as part of a 2019 Infrastructure Access Agreement signed with Whitsunday Regional Council for the construction of the Carmichael Rail Network. Fortescue delivers first BYD battery to WA

Fortescue (ASX: FMG) has delivered its first large-scale BYD Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to North Star Junction (NSJ) in a move to decarbonise its Pilbara iron ore operations.

The Rhodes Ridge Joint venture partners include Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) 50%, Mitsui 40% and AMB Holdings 10%, who intend to invest a further $225m (US$146m) in exploration between 2026 and 2028 as part of ongoing study phases.

Macmahon lands $792m contract

Macmahon Holdings (ASX: MAH) has executed a new three-year contract at the Byerwen coking coal mine in Queensland.Macmahon has been a part of the Bowen Basin mine since its establishment in 2017 undertaking open cut mining services, including load and haul and crusher feed, and provides employment to 545 people on site.This contract acts as a continuation of Macmahon’s services from December 2025 with no additional capital expenditure required beyond sustaining capital budgets.The contract also highlights an option to extend a further two years, resulting in an increased total value of $1.32b.The Byerwen mine is owned by Byerwen Coal, a joint venture between QCoal Group and Japanese steel manufacturer JFE Steel.Macmahon managing director and chief executive Michael Finnegan comments on the contract.“The QCoal relationship and Byerwen project are incredibly important to Macmahon and have helped underpin the company’s continued growth over the last nine years,” he said.Following the notice of award announcement for the project to the ASX in April, Macmahon’s shares increased from $.23 to $.61 as of December 17. This is the company’s highest level since early-May 2012.Macmahon’s FY26 guidance remains unchanged.
