QUEENSLAND explorer Sovereign Metals has announced its intention to acquire McCourt Mining, which owns the Central Malawi graphite project in Africa. Under the sale agreement, Sovereign will pay $100,000 to McCourt immediately, followed by a payment of $900,000 and 12.5 million fully paid ordinary shares to complete the transaction. The transaction is subject to shareholder approval and due diligence. The 8070 square kilometre Central Malawi project comprises two tenements near the Malawi capital of Lilongwe and will be the company’s first international acquisition. To date, geological mapping and surface sampling has been conducted at the project and three prospects containing substantial amounts of high-grade graphite have been identified: Tuinchi, Kaolatsitsi and Mpatozombe. Siviour confirmed a second largest proven reserve of graphite in the world An update to the mineral ore reserve estimate confirms Renascor Resources’ (ASX:RNU) Siviour graphite project as the second largest reported proven reserve of graphite in the world. Further, it confirms Siviour as the largest reported total ore reserve of graphite outside of Africa. This update includes a 13% increase in total reserves and an 8% increase in proven reserves and provides additional confidence in the size and quality of Siviour as a consistent source of high-quality graphite. THE Mongolian Government is set to repeal a controversial law restricting foreign ownership in ‘strategic sectors’, following a 43 per cent decline in foreign direct investment. The Strategic Entities Foreign Investment Law (SEFIL), established in May 2012, targeted ‘strategic’ industries including mining, finance, and media and telecommunications. The law required foreign investors to seek government approval for acquisitions of more than 33 per cent equity, while acquisitions of more than 49 per cent equity required parliamentary approval. State-owned firms also required approval to obtain interest in any ‘strategic’ assets.
