A new training centre in a prime Moranbah position will help boost mines rescue capabilities and shorten response times when incidents occur in Queensland’s Bowen Basin mining hub. Anglo American and Exxaro — which own a 50-50 joint venture steelmaking coal exploration project at Moranbah South — have leased an 18ha parcel of land to Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS). The land, on the corner of Railway Road and Moranbah Access Road, is opposite the planned site for stage 3 of the Resources Centre of Excellence. Bravus Mining and Resources has unveiled the newest and biggest Peer Supporters for the industry-leading mental health program run at its Carmichael mine near Clermont in central Queensland. Bravus Mining and Resources health and safety manager Graeme Furnell said two of the operation’s fleet of 200t CAT 796AC mining trucks had been fitted with trays painted in ‘Peer Supporter purple’ to remind the workforce that support is available should they be going through a tough time. “More than 1200 workers live at Carmichael during their swing and over time we’ve built a great sense of community among the people here,” he said. “A big part of that is we all look after each other’s mental health and wellbeing while we’re…

BY AMY BLOM TNG Limited’s Mount Peake mine is a step closer after the Northern Territory Government granted the company a mineral lease on 21 November. Mount Peake, 235km north of Alice Springs, had the potential to create up to 500 jobs during construction and between 175 and 250 ongoing roles during operation. Malabar Resources has welcomed the decision by the NSW Independent Planning Commission (IPC) to approve the Maxwell Underground Project near Muswellbrook in the NSW’s Upper Hunter. The determination follows the project’s comprehensive and technical review by independent experts and rigorous assessment by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (Department). The Department in its whole-of-government assessment report concluded that the Maxwell Underground Project was “in the public interest” and “approvable”. The project also underwent significant community consultation and engagement, including through the public exhibition of the project’s Environmental Impact Statement in September 2019 and a public hearing facilitated by the IPC in November 2020. COPPER has hit a three-month high on the London Metal Exchange, reaching its highest price in two months after a long run of losing sessions. The metal closed 1.9pc higher due to the fears of copper smelters in China reducing output by as much as 15pc as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. Concerns over short supplies of refined metals spurred the higher prices, amid transport restrictions from China. China issued import quotas for another 4620t of high-grade copper scrap and 1440t of aluminium scrap for use in 2020.
