Miners embracing next generation of dust control solutions -Vital Chemicals

Mining operations across Australia are increasingly turning to a new generation of advanced dust control solutions that help operators achieve their regulatory, commercial and environmental goals while reducing the reliance on increasingly scarce water resources.

While water remains the most commonly mandated dust control solution, it is resource-intensive, costly to transport and increasingly scarce in remote locations.

The effectiveness of water is also limited in high-traffic areas such as haul roads and site-based operations, where sandy substrates rapidly drain moisture, requiring frequent reapplication and placing significant strain on supplies and budgets.

Alternative methods, such as spraying paper-based products, also present limitations, leaving miners with dust control solutions that fail to deliver long-term suppression, increase maintenance demands and disrupt site productivity.

To overcome these shortcomings Queensland-based Vital Chemical has developed a range of high-quality dust suppression solutions for the mining industry that reduce the requirement for resource-intensive water carting.

Vital Chemical Director Paul McMullen said adopting more effective dust control solutions could improve the performance of many mining operations.

“Dust control is a critical issue for mining operations because it directly affects safety, productivity and compliance,” Mr McMullen said.

Vital’s dust control products are designed as a one-stage application, with application rates be tailored to site conditions, traffic volumes and project duration.

Where required, an ongoing dust management program can be implemented throughout the project lifecycle, helping mining operations lower costs, conserve water resources and maintain compliance without compromising performance.

“Mining sites are not one-size-fits-all, which is why adaptability is so important. We work closely with operators to customise application rates based on soil type, traffic, climate and the life of the project, ensuring consistent performance over time,” Mr McMullen said.

“By reducing water consumption, maintenance requirements and operational downtime, our products help mining companies lower costs, protect equipment and maintain safe working conditions while still meeting environmental and regulatory obligations.”

Vital Chemical is a global leader in developing and delivering science-based solutions that restore, protect and enhance the environment. From erosion control and dust suppression to revegetation and water treatment, Vital products are engineered to meet the highest environmental standards, ensuring compliance, performance and long-term sustainability.

Vital primary dust control products include:

Vital Bon-Matt RDS (S72) – a robust and durable haul road stabilising formulation for heavy traffic conditions. It is a certified non-hazardous, natural polymer formulation for efficient dust and erosion control on haul and site access roads.

Commonly employed in areas of extreme environmental sensitivity and for temporary stabilisation before site rehabilitation and revegetation. Vital Bon-Matt RDS (S72) combines Vital Bon-Matt technology with the benefits of natural lignin polymers.

Vital Bon-Matt HR – a heavy-duty, concentrated formulation designed for the heaviest trafficked, unsealed road surface applications and other more challenging stabilisation scenarios.  Formulated to greatly reduce erodible surfaces by wind, water and traffic, Vital Bon-Matt HR is a highly effective solution where strong binding and durable surface conditions are required.

The product is an environmentally sound concentrated liquid formulation, diluted with water before application. Curing within hours and not remobilising into the surrounding environment, Vital Bon-Matt HR offers a robust, environmentally sound solution for challenging stabilisation environments.

Vital has also created its HR, P47-VR1 and Stonewall products in a ready-to-use, pre-mix formulation that further reduces the need to add water and mix water on site.
