Mine the gap

Securing the future of metallurgical excellence

The demand for highly skilled mineral processing engineers has never been greater. Yet, the pipeline to supplying this vital expertise is shrinking.

Across Australia, and globally, many engineering schools have cut or entirely closed their specialty programs. While university degrees remain highly sound in teaching fundamentals, the deep, specialised technical knowledge needed for mineral processing is becoming more difficult to find.

Consequentially, miners are left with a major challenge: how can the available workforce be transformed into competent, job-ready metallurgists who can deliver immediate value on site?

Metcelerate is bridging the gap between theory and the processing plant floor.

When Metcelerate was established in 2019, its founders set out to solve a challenge facing the mining industry: how to accelerate the development of the next generation of mineral processing engineers without taking them away from the workplace.  They developed an innovative professional development program that blends on-the-job learning with structured technical education.

The specialised 20-month curriculum integrates seamlessly with full-time operational schedules to deliver a high-quality, flexible learning model. The program begins with 14 months of online, self-paced technical learning supported by weekly live tutorials with globally recognised subject matter experts.

Most importantly, participants are not merely passive consumers of content. Every module requires practical, plant-based assignments — such as conducting audits or reviews — allowing students to translate theory into immediate workplace action.

“[The course was] a thorough and rewarding journey that deepened my expertise in mineral processing at a Master’s level,” Metso R&D project manager Garrett Sollon said.

The final six-months of the course are the most valuable; for both the learner and the employer. The program culminates in a self-directed six-month process optimisation project, a real-world problem-solving initiative carried out on-site.

The financial and operational benefits generated by this final project are often significant enough to justify the cost of the course in its entirety, delivering a clear and measurable return on investment for employers.

Throughout the program, Metcelerate also provides a monthly report to give employers direct insight into the participants development and progress.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates receive an internationally recognised PIABC Level 7 Diploma in Mineral Processing. Since launching in 2020, Metcelerate has trained more than 390 metallurgists across 13 countries in English, Spanish and French.

The results speak for themselves.

I can clearly see the impact it has had on strengthening my technical and professional capabilities,” Newmont process control specialist Raul Yonagusuku said.

Ultimately, investing in graduates is not just a human resources objective. It is a strategic necessity that protects and improves future operational value.
