The contract, set to finish in 2018, was terminated early due to security concerns and ongoing low mining volumes linked to the client’s production plant. On 28 October operations at the project ceased, and demobilisation was now in progress. “We’ve been working at Calabar since January 2012 and our contract has been to undertake quarrying operations at UniCem’s 2.5Mtpa cement manufacturing plant in Mfamosing, about 40km north east of Calabar in Cross River State, Nigeria,” a company spokesperson said....

By Elizabeth Fabri CHINESE–owned Yancoal Australia has entered a binding agreement with Rio Tinto to purchase its wholly-owned subsidiary Coal & Allied Industries for $US2.45 billion. Subject to regulatory Government and shareholder approvals, the deal would see Yancoal acquire a 100 per cent interest in Coal & Allied through an initial $US1.95bn cash payment at completion; $500 million in aggregate deferred cash payments; and coal price linked royalty. DUAL-listed Alacer Gold is selling its minority stake in the Frog’s Leg mine as well as two exploration projects near Kalgoorlie for $141 million, following the completion of a major strategic review. The company has entered into a binding asset sale and purchase agreement with La Mancha Resources Australia for its 49 per cent interest in Frog’s Leg; its 24.5 per cent interest in the Lake Greta joint venture; and its 40 per cent share in the Avoca JV. Once the acquisitions are completed, La Mancha will own 100 per cent of Frog’s Leg and continue as operator.
