ROCKHAMPTON has won the recruitment jackpot with giant Adani announcing both a new rail contract and regional employment hub for the town on the same day. The new Rockhampton Business Centre will provide a base for the recruitment and contracting of local businesses for the company’s Carmichael Project mine, rail construction and operations. To date, more than $450m worth of contracts have already been awarded for the project, with much of the work under undertaken by companies based in regional Queensland areas, according to Adani Mining chief executive officer Lucas Dow – who said that the business centre would help Adani deliver on its commitment to ensuring Rockhampton, along with Townsville, were the primary employment hubs for the project. “This…

ADANI has finally been cleared to start work on its Carmichael coalmine after the Queensland government approved the company’s plans for black-throated finch and groundwater management. It follows intense pressure on the Queensland government after Labor’s loss in the recent federal elections, blamed on the state’s perceived stalling over the mine go-ahead. EMBATTLED Indian miner Adani is vowing to press on to get the earth moved at its Queensland mine operations. The company said while it was ready to begin building the mine in the Galilee Basin in central Queensland, approval processes were continuing to hinder progress. The miner met with the state’s Environment Department in early May, where it was told a number of new commitments need to be met before the plan is approved, including its management plan for an endangered finch, further delaying the controversial multi-billion-dollar project.
