Scholarships strengthen Australia’s critical minerals leadership

The program is managed by the Australian Critical Minerals R&D Hub hosted by CSIRO.

The WA Government has announced a scholarship program for advance critical minerals research projects with funding from the state’s Department of Industry, Science and Resources.

The critical minerals sector is pivotal to the global transition to clean energy, advanced manufacturing and sustainable technologies.

The international scholarship program encourages eligible Australian researchers, postgraduate students and professionals to collaborate with global experts and contribute to Australia’s strategic priorities in the critical minerals sector.

Successful applicants can receive up to $10,000 per month over a six-month period to cover airfares, accommodation, transportation and related expenses.

The funding supports research projects aligned with the Australian Critical Minerals Strategy 2023-2030 (ACMS) and fosters innovation that addresses technical challenges in critical mineral supply chains.

The program is open to individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Australian citizen or permanent resident (including Australian citizens who are temporarily overseas).
  • Employed by an organisation with a valid Australian business number (ABN) and Australian company number (ACN).
  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Engaged in activities related to critical minerals such as research at a university or agency, enrolment in a PhD or relevant postgraduate studies or work in policy regulation or education initiatives tied to critical minerals.
  • Research proposals that align with Australia’s strategic interests as defined in the ACMS.

The scholarship is intended to enable collaborative research that enhances Australia’s capabilities in critical minerals by offering significant opportunities in global research, professional development, strategic contribution and financial support.

The program facilitates impactful research collaborations with leading institutions in high priority countries including EU member states, Germany, France, the UK, Korea, Canada, Japan and the USA.

Applications are open from April to December of this year, or until funds are fully exhausted. Scholarships will be awarded until late February next year or until funding is fully allocated.
