Record jobs growth in WA mining

The state recorded 135,693 on-site full-time equivalent positions in 2024.

Employment in WA’s resource sector has reached record heights, marking eight consecutive years of employment growth within the industry.

The WA Government has attributed the continued growth to strong mineral and petroleum sales totalling more than $223b and the continued development of iron ore, gold, lithium, nickel and alumina operations across the state.

Last year, iron ore dominated mineral sales totalling $128b, the third highest ever recorded by the state, driven by strong prices and the production of near-record volumes.

Gold also hit a record $24b in sales amid a stellar price environment.

The state also saw the highest value in alumina sales, $7.4b, since the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“WA’s resources sector continues to set new benchmarks, with record employment and strong sales driving economic growth across the state,” WA Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael said.

“As the global economy shifts, WA’s resources sector is well placed to support the energy transition, critical minerals development, and ongoing exploration.

“More than 135,000 people are now employed in our resources sector — the highest on record — showing the industry’s vital role in creating jobs for Western Australians.”

Exploration held strong with near-record expenditure of $2.5b focused on gold, iron ore, nickel, cobalt, copper, lithium and rare earths.

More than $32b was invested in the state’s resource sector in 2024, reflecting sustained industry confidence.

WA Premier Roger Cook says that the WA Government will continue to diversify the state’s economy and future.

“The record jobs growth in WA’s mining sector shows there is no better place in the world to get a quality job, with iron ore, gold, liquid natural gas and alumina all big contributors to the state’s jobs boom,” he said.

“Robust exploration spending across key commodities like gold, lithium and rare earths reinforces WA’s position as a global minerals leader.

“These figures reflect the industry’s continued confidence in WA and its commitment to long-term growth.”
