ARB StealthBar
The smarter front-end protection
With safety, durability and compliance always under the microscope in mining, ARB SmartBar has released a new StealthBar fitment for the latest Mitsubishi Triton. ARB caught up with Kieran Jenkins, technical sales manager at ARB SmartBar, to talk about what makes the StealthBar a smart choice for mining fleets and how it’s built for tough Australian conditions.
For those unfamiliar, what is the StealthBar and how’s it different to a traditional bull bar?
KJ: The StealthBar is essentially a modern, lightweight take on the traditional bull bar. It’s manufactured from a high-performance, UV-stabilised polymer, so you’re getting durability and impact protection, without the risks of corrosion or excess weight. A typical StealthBar weighs a lot less than traditional bull bars.
The main advantage is that its hollow construction absorbs impact rather than transferring it, which is better for both the vehicle and pedestrians. It’s still winch compatible, has mounting options for accessories and is engineered to integrate with the vehicle’s safety systems. So, you get increased protection and functionality, without adding significant weight.
Why is that important for mining operations specifically?
KJ: Mining is one of the harshest environments for vehicles. Exposure to dust, moisture, high salinity and UV, not to mention the risk of low-speed impacts around site. The StealthBar really suits that world because it’s durable, non-corrosive and designed to absorb an impact and return to shape.
Also, its lighter weight reduces strain on suspension and helps with fuel efficiency, especially important when vehicles are carrying heavy loads or operating close to Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) limits. From a safety perspective, it integrates with all the factory sensors and radar, so there’s no compromise on safety features.
Is it ready to go for mine-spec applications?
KJ: Yes, it has been developed with fleet and mining use in mind, so it’s ready to meet the most common mine-spec requirements. We can also supply it in high-visibility colours and it’s easy to fit mine accessories like safety flags, beacons, UHF antennas or driving lights.
If a mine site has specific requirements, we can usually customise the setup. We’re used to working closely with safety managers and procurement teams on this.
What models is the StealthBar currently available for?
KJ: Our newest fitment is for the MY24 Mitsubishi Triton, but we’ve also got StealthBar variants for the Ford Ranger and Everest, the Toyota Hilux and the LandCruiser 70 Series. We’re continuing to expand the range too.
If you have a different vehicle we also have the SpartanBar model which offers increased vehicle protection, above the StealthBar.
How does it hold up in the real world?
KJ: It has been great, it is designed in Australia for Australian conditions. For decades our SmartBar range have been in service with mining companies and the feedback has been consistent. The bar doesn’t rust and minor incidents don’t take vehicles off the road. It’s also common to hear that the materials longevity was well above expectations, our bull bars normally outlive the life of a vehicle in the corrosive mining world.
Why the Mitsubishi Triton?
KJ: Our customer base normally dictates our priorities and due to the Tritons popularity it was important to develop the StealthBar vehicle protection. The value they offer and their modern safety systems is one of the reasons they are popular.
How does the StealthBar handle the Triton’s safety systems?
KJ: No problems at all. The StealthBar is engineered to work with the latest Triton’s driver assistance tech including front and side radars, autonomous braking and parking sensors. Everything continues to function exactly as the manufacturer intended. That’s a core part of our development process.
Where can operators or fleet managers enquire?
KJ: ARB SmartBar has a national dealer network, so we can support installations right across the country. We also have a dedicated fleet and commercial team who work with larger operators to manage rollout, spec approvals and any custom requirements.
If you’re looking at upgrading your fleet or preparing new vehicles for site, just get in touch with us and we’ll guide you through the process.
