Albemarle idles WA lithium plant despite price lift

The NSW Government has approved a six-year extension to the Dartbrook coal mine in the Hunter Valley, allowing operations to continue until December 2033.The mine’s current license allows for extraction of up to 6mtpa of coal and is valid until the end of 2027.The site has a history of financial challenges. The Dartbrook coal mine was placed into care and maintenance in late 2025, less than a year after new owners relaunched operations, after entering voluntary administration and receivership in July. This decision came after operators defaulted on a $202m loan.Later that month, as its financial standing deteriorated mass redundancies occurred across the site that saw a workforce reduction of about two-thirds.According to an economic analysis conducted by the NSW Government, the extension, known as MOD8, has a projected net benefit to the economy of $471m, including $73m in gross wages, 240 direct jobs and 613 indirect jobs.If the maximum extraction rates were realised, the total revenue would extend to $1.28b, according to the NSW Government.Muswellbrook Shire Council has been supportive of the extension but has conveyed concerns if any further extensions were to be considered.In a letter to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Muswellbrook Shire Council environmental planning director Sharon Pope said the original mine approvals were given in 2001 and were supported by an environmental impact statement (EIS) dated 2000.“Staff remain concerned that the original EIS no longer reflects current standards,” she said.“The age of the baseline data raises doubts about its reliability. Given these uncertainties, staff recommend no further time extensions after MOD8 unless comprehensive, up-to-date assessments are completed.”Underground mining has been approved at Dartbrook since 1991, however mining only occurred between 1996 to 2006.The previous operator, Anglo American, mothballed the site in 2006 following a series of safety challenges and operational concerns and three worker fatalities. The site had been idle for 19 years prior to the initial restart in 2024.

Yilgarn Iron completes first shipment Yilgarn Iron has completed its first shipment with more than 176,000t of iron ore loaded through the Port of Esperance in WA.The five-day operation saw iron ore loaded onto the bulk carrier MV Densa Shark, which departed for China on Saturday.The shipment comes less than 12 months after Mineral Resources' (ASX: MIN) final export from the Koolyanobbing operations in the Yilgarn Hub, which were acquired by Yilgarn Iron Investments in June.Southern Ports chief executive officer Keith Wilks says having Yilgarn Iron come on board as the Port of Esperance's second iron ore exporter less than a year on from the operations ceasing in the Yilgarn is a great result."Two customers using our iron ore infrastructure means more volume and more shipments from our Port of Esperance, which ultimately means more hours for our workforce on the ground,” he said."Trade losses are never easy to weather, but by proactively pursuing opportunities to diversify our customer base and commodity throughput we continue to be a reliable partner creating enduring value across our regions."At full production, Yilgarn Iron is targeting annual exports of more than 4mt, supporting the creation of up to 15 new operational roles at the Port of Esperance in early 2026 and increasing the port's operations workforce by more than a third.Yilgarn Iron Investments managing director Fergus Campbell comments on the shipment."Exporting our first 176,000t within less than four months of assuming control of the Yilgarn Iron Ore project is a testament to our hardworking and dedicated team, as well as to our suppliers and service providers, including Southern Ports and Aurizon,” he said.Yilgarn Iron becomes the second customer to use the port's iron ore circuit, joining Gold Valley, which has exported almost 2.5mt of iron ore through the Port of Esperance since its first shipment in October 2024.

Core Lithium (ASX: CXO) will begin open pit mining and ore production at its Grants deposit in May as it advances the restart of its Finniss lithium operation in the Northern Territory.The restart has been supported by the award of a $50m surface mining services contract to NRW (ASX: NWH), alongside the start of the BP33 box cut and civil infrastructure site works.Core Lithium managing director Paul Brown says the award of the Grants open pit mining contract marks a key step in the restart of the Finniss lithium operation.“Grants provides a low risk, near term source of ore using existing infrastructure, enabling a rapid and capital efficient pathway back into production,” he said.“With mobilisation commencing immediately, this contract underpins our restart schedule and near term cash generation objectives.“With final investment decision approval and funding now in place, our focus is firmly on delivery. This contract positions Finniss to deliver the first spodumene concentrate in the December quarter.“We are making strong progress across the balance of our restart workstreams, and we expect to finalise additional key contracts in the near-term as we bring Finniss back into production.”The November 2025 updated mine plan increased ore reserves for Grants by 33% to 1.53mt at 1.42% lithium oxide, lifting contained lithium oxide by 44%.The Grants open pit is expected to supply near term ore feed for the Finniss processing plant, enabling an accelerated production timeline at a lower initial capital cost, according to Core.Core expects the BP33 underground development to support the operation’s transition to long-life, high-margin underground operations.
