Exporting a LeTourneau Front Loader from Australia to South Africa for Equipment Mining
- Project dates: December 2024 – 8 February 2025
- 3 break bulk units of a LeTourneau L1850 front loader
- Heaviest unit: Main body – 70 tonnes (out-of-gauge in every dimension)
- Other units: Bucket and rear assembly
The Challenge:
The client had been searching for a solution for nearly three months when they turned to Magellan. Other forwarders had proposed routes via Brisbane or Mackay, adding time and cost.
Magellan instead managed road transport from Mackay to Townsville before the Christmas curfew, repositioned lifting gear from Singapore to meet the vessel schedule, and overcame shore crane constraints during night loading – all while ensuring smooth discharge and clearance in Durban for final delivery to the Mozambique mines.
The Solution:

Magellan identified Townsville Port as the most efficient and cost-effective route following a rapid feasibility assessment. We maintained close coordination with all stakeholders and secured a firm, fixed-price vessel booking within 48 hours – unlocking a solution after months of delay. Our Projects GM was on-site for loading and discharge, enabling real-time decisions and ensuring safe, compliant handling using specialised flat racks, cranes, and securement – despite challenging night operations.
The Result:
This was more than just a successful shipment – it was a solution the client didn’t know was possible. By moving the cargo out of Townsville rather than Brisbane or Mackay, Magellan saved the client both time and money, while ensuring the cargo reached Durban in time for final delivery to Mozambique.

So, what?:
Moving oversized cargo under pressure demands more than logistics—it requires expertise, urgency, and full commitment. With hands-on support, clear communication, and agile project management, Magellan gave Equipment Mining more than a freight solution – we gave them peace of mind.
Magellan delivered where others hesitated: on time, on budget, and without compromise.
