BHP (ASX: BHP) and Hedland Maritime Initiative (HMI) have partnered to make 12 new properties available for short-term lease in Port Hedland’s West End in WA. This will address the lack of affordable short-term accommodation in the area. HMI acquired the properties under the Port Hedland Voluntary Buy-Back Scheme (PHVBS). A $259k donation from BHP will provide brand new furniture and get them ready for their first lease through local realtor Hedland First National. The properties will be able to be leased for periods from five days up to three months. Alcoa Australia will enhance its longstanding commitment to protecting, restoring and sharing knowledge about the forest by establishing a dedicated research centre. The aluminium producer, which mines bauxite in select areas of the Northern Jarrah Forest in WA’s Darling Range, has dedicated $15m of research funding over the next five years delivered through the formation of a new Forest Research Centre. Alcoa is also increasing its internal environmental research team from four to 11 staff and upgrading existing facilities at several of its WA locations to support the research programs. Two purpose-built transhippers — MinRes Airlie and MinRes Coolibah — have arrived at Mineral Resources’ (ASX: MIN) Onslow iron project in WA. MinRes’ transhippers are unique in Australia and form an integral part of the Onslow project which is expected to deliver first ore on ship in mid-2024. After successful sea trials off Zhoushan port in China, the vessels were transported via a Cosco Shipping heavy lift vessel to the Pilbara coast. The WA Government has received almost $20b in funding support for critical minerals processing and resource exploration announced by the Federal Government’s 2024-2025 budget. Critical minerals producers with existing downstream processing activities and those entering production in the future will be supported by a 10% production tax credit of $17.6b over 14 years. A $10.2m investment in pre-feasibility studies to develop critical mineral common-user processing facilities and help small and medium-sized companies become producers. A further $566.1m commitment over 10 years will support the industry in finding new deposits of minerals and sources of energy and help build a future made in Australia. Anglo American has rejected BHP’s (ASX: BHP) second proposal after the latter revised the original $59.57b (£31.1b) proposal. Anglo rejected the first proposal as it “significantly undervalues Anglo American and its future prospects” and the company’s board believed it contemplated a structure which is highly unattractive for shareholders. On May 7, Anglo American received a second unsolicited, non-binding and highly conditional combination proposal from BHP. Under the latest proposal, for each Anglo American share owned, Anglo American shareholders would receive 0.8132 BHP shares and ordinary shares in Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore (distributed in proportion to each shareholder’s interest in the two companies). Latrobe Magnesium (ASX: LMG) has produced the world’s first magnesium oxide from brown coal fly ash – a waste resource from brown coal power generation. This marks a significant milestone in pioneering a sustainable magnesium extraction method, at an industrial scale, using Latrobe’s patented, world-first hydromet process. ‘ Latrobe’s hydrometallurgical extraction/thermal reduction technology is the only process capable of extracting magnesium from brown coal fly ash and ferro-nickel slag tailing feedstocks. It produces magnesium oxide, supplementary cementitious material, silica, char, iron oxide and agricultural lime (calcium carbonate). Not only does this process reduce the operating cost of traditional magnesium and cement production methods, but also reduces carbon emissions by as much as 60%.
