By Cameron Drummond THE purchase of Dakota Minerals’ Lynas Find lithium project has further strengthened Pilbara Minerals’ position in the Pilgangoora lithium district. Pilbara Minerals will fork out up to $8 million for Dakota’s stake, which adjoins its existing lithium tenements in the region. Under the agreement, the company will pay $4m cash up front for Dakota’s core Lynas Find package, plus an additional $1m on the granting of a term extension on one of the core tenements. A further $750,000 for each of an additional four exploration tenements currently under application by Dakota will be paid in either cash or shares. The contract, set to finish in 2018, was terminated early due to security concerns and ongoing low mining volumes linked to the client’s production plant. On 28 October operations at the project ceased, and demobilisation was now in progress. “We’ve been working at Calabar since January 2012 and our contract has been to undertake quarrying operations at UniCem’s 2.5Mtpa cement manufacturing plant in Mfamosing, about 40km north east of Calabar in Cross River State, Nigeria,” a company spokesperson said. “During this…

By Cameron Drummond THE Australian Government has increased its 2016-17 export value projections for coal and iron ore due to higher commodity prices and an unexpected uptick in Chinese construction activity. The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science’s latest Resources and Energy Quarterly report increased its FY17 outlook for both commodities, adding $12.7 billion to previous estimates. As a result the total value of Australia’s resources and energy exports for FY17 was revised up 12 per cent from the June quarter estimate of $163 billion to $176 billion. Increased social use of drugs outside the workplace remains a challenge for employers to manage. By Cameron Drummond GROWING drug and alcohol use in the resources sector has increased the challenges facing employers, according to a report by the Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA). A 2016 AMMA Drug and Alcohol Survey has shown that businesses were progressively more worried about the social acceptance of the use of prescription and illicit substances in the workplace. However the survey showed that out of a total of 53 companies across the industry that responded, only 40 per cent test for synthetic cannabis, raising concerns about the ability of testing to keep up with rapidly changing substance types. The project’s combined mine, rail, and associated water infrastructure were declared Critical Infrastructure – the first time this has happened in seven years. When a Prescribed Project is considered to be “critical or essential” for economic, social or environmental reasons to Queensland, the minister may also declare it a Critical Infrastructure project. By Reuben Adams A $20.5 million takeover bid for WA-based explorer Windward Resources could substantially increase Independence Group’s (IGO) tenement holdings around its Nova project in the Fraser Range of WA. IGO’s 5 October offer of $0.19 per share – a 46 per cent premium to the last close at 16 September 2016 – was unanimously supported by the Windward board. Windward major shareholder Mark Creasy (27.44 per cent), who originally discovered the world-class Nova deposit with Sirius Resources, intended to accept the offer in the absence of a superior proposal. State-wide blackouts have wreaked havoc on South Australia’s mining industry. By Reuben Adams WILD weather has forced South Australia’s biggest miners to shut down operations following the state-wide blackout on Wednesday, 28 September. BHP Billiton announced that Olympic Dam was able to safely shut down operations and the site de-mobilised, with backup generators providing power to critical infrastructure to allow a restart of operations when power is restored. “Our primary focus is the safety and welfare of our people,” BHP said in a statement. “We are liaising closely with Electranet and the State Government to ensure power is restored to Roxby Downs town and Olympic Dam as soon as possible.” As of 3 October Olympic Dam was receiving some power…

The Titan Nickel Project discovery, made by a private Australian company, was said to contain an ‘improbable’ kind of nickel that formed in small balls 0.1-5.0mm in diameter, compared to traditional nickel that needed to be refined from soil. Subsidiary Tianqi Lithium Australia announced it had received final approval from its parent company’s board of directors to build the plant. The company anticipated the creation of 500 jobs during construction and more than 115 full time production jobs upon its expected completion in late 2018. The Kwinana plant would process spodumene concentrate from the Greenbushes lithium mine in WA’s South West region, producing 24,000 tonnes per annum of lithium hydroxide for use in lithium batteries.
