The Australian Resources & Energy Employer Association (AREEA) has identified 107 new projects, worth about $131b and creating almost 27,000 jobs over the next five years. WA alone accounts for 48 new projects, or 44% of the investment pipeline, requiring at least 11,000 new workers by the end of 2029. AREEA’s new report, Resources and Energy Workforce Forecast: 2024-2029, breaks down the estimated labour required to operate new, expansion and restarted mining and oil and gas projects, based on modelling of the Federal Department of Industry project data. All conditions have now been satisfied for Rio Tinto’s (ASX: RIO) investment to develop the Simandou high-grade iron ore deposit in Guinea. This investment will be the largest greenfield integrated mine and infrastructure investment in Africa. More than 600km of new co-developed rail with port facilities will allow the export of up to 120mtpa of mined iron ore by Simfer and WCS from their respective Simandou mining concessions. Mineral Resources (MinRes) (ASX: MIN) won the firefighting event in the surface mine emergency rescue competition run by the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) in Coolgardie. The event allows teams to compete in vehicle extrication, hazardous material response, confined space rescue, rope rescue, team skills, theory, mass casualty first aid and incident management. This was the first year MinRes had entered a team in the competition, winning the firefighting event in which participants worked through a scenario where a fire had spread from a vehicle to an excavator. WA based XRF Scientific (ASX: XRF) will acquire the remaining 50% of Orbis Mining in an acquisition valued at $3.91m. XRF states this is a low risk, bolt-on acquisition with highly complementary products as the majority of XRF’s existing customers require laboratory jaw crushers like those produced by Orbis. XRF acquired its initial 50% shareholding for $800,000 in 2021. Since then, Orbis has grown significantly and continues to gain market share. In FY21, Orbis produced unaudited revenue of $2.3m and profit before tax of $0.34m. In FY24, Orbis generated unaudited revenue of $5.8m and profit before tax of $1.7m. Sheffield Resources (ASX: SFX) has ramped up production and shipments from the Thunderbird mineral sands mine in WA. Production has increased month on month with around 825kt of ore mined in June 2024. For the June 2024 quarter, total ore mined is expected to be 2.2mt, around 20% higher than the operating rate assumed within in the 2022 bankable feasibility study (BFS). The increase production resulted in 55kt of ilmenite concentrate produced in June and 120kt for the quarter, while zircon concentrate was 13kt for June and 33kt for the quarter. A national survey of Generation Z, 15 to 24-year-olds, has found almost three quarters (72%), believe mining is important to a net zero emissions future. However, land rehabilitation and workplace culture top the list of their concerns (a tie at 77%), followed by renewable energy use (69%) and reducing or recycling mining waste and pollution (67%). The Gen Z Perceptions of Mining report, developed by AUSMASA in partnership with Year 13, aims to better understand how young people perceive the mining industry and how to encourage more young Australians to pursue career opportunities in mining. Komatsu has acquired fleet management company iVolve Pty Ltd in a move that will enable the brand to reach a broader global market and grow its footprint in the mining and quarry industries.
