Boston-based instrumentation company SciAps recently opened a location in Australia. The company specialises in handheld portable analytical instruments that measure any mineral, any element, in any place on the planet. It’s industry-leading X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-based (LIBS) analysers are hard at work across every major industry, including the new specialty field of geochemistry.

As the only handheld instrumentation company to offer both XRF and LIBS for the geochemistry and mining industry, SciAps gives asset owners complete visibility when it comes to research, exploration, grade control, block modeling, process optimisation, and much more, all via a handheld device.

SciAps has 35 years of combined experience with elemental handheld technology across the United States and Australia. This is backed by a knowledgeable team of regional geoscientists and market-specific support staff, that understand and provide tailored solutions to Australian clients.

According to SciAps Global Business Director of Geochemistry, Andrew Somers, LIBS and XRF analysers are what the company does best.

“Our LIBS analyser technology enables in-field analysis of lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, sodium, and fluorine,” said Mr Somers.

“We can analyse lithium in hard rocks, ores, powders, and brines (Z-903 only). This LIBS analyser also has high sensitivity to other major elements including Magnesium, Silicon, Aluminum, Calcium, and Potassium. The analyser can also map elemental distribution using the GeoChem Pro application. The Z-903 analyser is our flagship product for geochemistry, particularly clients that require full elemental coverage from Hydrogen to Uranium. The spectrometer spans 190-950 nm to measure low atomic number elements that the XRF can’t, including beryllium, boron, carbon, fluorine and sodium, plus the many transition and heavy metals that XRF can measure.”

SciAps’ Z-901 lithium analyser is the world’s only handheld analyser capable of measuring lithium in rocks, ores, and powders, and offers in-field analysis at a value price point.
The SciAps XRF range are the smallest, fastest, most precise handheld analysers available on the market, with the most powerful X-ray tube – ideal for gold pathfinders, transition, and heavy metals – optimised for rare earth elements. The XRF thrives in rugged conditions and produces results in under five seconds.

“Our X-555 analyser, which is the most advanced X-ray tube technology available, led by a 55 kV X-ray tube – the world’s only handheld XRF with this capability,” said Mr Somers.
“The 55 kV operation, rather than the common industry 50 kV, delivers higher performance for critical ‘light’ and some ‘heavy’ rare earth elements (REEs), making it a superior option for REE analysis.

“The X-505 is the best-in-class light element performance for ultra-low detection limits of elements like silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, and aluminum. With the optional 50 kVm mining calibration, it gets even better LODs on heavier REEs or gold pathfinders like Silver or Antimony. A 5.5W X-ray tube combined with the latest large area silicon drift detector technology and super tight X-ray geometry yields fast, precise results even on the hardest elements to measure with handheld XRF”

It’s important to note that the SciAps LIBS analyser does not require licensing in most Australian states.

SciAps is capable of supplying analysers within a few weeks post-order. Not only does the company deliver with such speed, but their high level of support and quick delivery continued during COVID-19 when other brands were challenged by supply chain issues, unable to meet client demands and taking a better part of a year to fulfill orders. With SciAps, clients receive innovative designs and updated software included backed by an ability to manufacture products and ship them quickly and reliably to our clients, no matter where they are located.

SciAps has been designing, selling, and servicing field-worthy handheld elemental analysers globally for over 20 years.

Mr Somers says that the company is well aware of the stats, the actual costs, and the value of customer loyalty.

“We’ve simplified the RMA process with repair and return prioritisation at no additional cost, added multi-point inspections, software and firmware updates – even updates that require a full re-calibration.

“With a dedicated support line, you never have to think about running an update and higher frequency status updates. Our sales and service teams are responsive, knowledgeable, and empathetic to clients’ needs. You will speak directly to a team member in Australia, who will help you when you need it. Our service team will quickly and cost-effectively diagnose, repair and return your instrument much faster than anywhere else.”

SciAps are excited to be exhibiting at exhibiting at the World Mining Congress in Brisbane, Australia on 26-29 June 2023. Don’t miss the unique opportunity to meet the team at Booth 175 and check out a live demo of their leading XRF and LIBS analysers in action.
