Comet acquires copper project GRAPHITE-focussed Australian exploration company Comet Resources plans to add a copper project in NSW to its portfolio. The Barraba copper project, named after the nearest town, is 550km north of Sydney, and its exploration licence covers 2375ha in a region known to host volcanic-style mineralisation containing copper, zinc and precious metals. Comet Resources managing director Matthew O’Kane said the Barraba project hosts several drill ready targets and is in a prospective location. “We will be working hard to be in a position to test the project’s prospectivity as soon as possible after completion,” he said. ALCOA has used an online crowdsourcing competition to connect with some of the world’s smartest people to improve the descaling process at its Wagerup Alumina Refinery in WA. The company collaborated with Unearthed, an innovative online business which connects the resources industry to thousands of developers, data scientists and innovators around the world who pitch novel and diverse solutions to industry challenges. Called Scale Away, the competition challenged participants to come up with ways to more efficiently descale tanks, vessels and pipes. During the refining process, which involves extracting alumina from bauxite, scale builds up and causes lost production from reduced available tank volume. CANADIAN precious metals company Osisko Mining has formally rejected a “hostile” takeover bid by fellow Canadian gold producer Goldcorp, labelling the move ‘opportunistic” and “inadequate”. In mid January, Vancouver-based Goldcorp announced it had placed an offer to acquire all outstanding common shares from Osisko, filing a takeover bid circular document with Canadian securities regulators and the US Securities Exchange Commission. Under the terms of the offer, Osisko shareholders would have received 0.146 of a Goldcorp common share, plus CAD$2.26 in cash for each Osisko common share tendered.
