Beyond the tank

Beyond the tank

On a mine site, fuel is the lifeblood of operations.

It powers the equipment, generators and infrastructure that keep production moving. But supplying fuel is only one part of the challenge. It must also be stored safely, protected from contamination, securely dispensed, accurately monitored and available wherever the operation needs it.

When one part of that system fails, the effects can quickly spread across the site.

PETRO Industrial is responding to this challenge by bringing fuel storage, dispensing, management technology, fuel quality services, equipment hire and site safety together as one integrated capability.

The hidden risk inside the tank

Fuel contamination can develop quietly. Water, sediment, microbial activity and deteriorating diesel may remain unnoticed inside a storage tank until filters begin blocking, dispensing slows or mobile equipment starts experiencing performance issues.

For remote mining operations, the consequences can extend well beyond the fuel system. Unexpected downtime, premature component wear, repeated filter replacement and disrupted production can quickly turn a preventable fuel quality issue into a significant operational cost.

It raises an important question for every operation.

What’s in your fuel?

PETRO’s new fuel quality and transfer services give mining operators a practical pathway from initial fuel sampling and assessment through to filtration, polishing, remediation and transfer.

Rather than waiting for equipment problems to reveal an issue, routine sampling can provide an earlier indication of what is happening inside the tank. If treatment is required, PETRO’s mobile equipment can be deployed to remove water and particulate contamination, circulate and polish stored fuel, or transfer fuel between tanks.

Structured preventative maintenance programs can also be arranged at three, six or twelve-month intervals, allowing fuel condition to be monitored over time.

Turning fuel data into operational control

While fuel quality protects the product, fuel management protects the operation.

Remote locations, multiple storage points, large mobile fleets and changing site personnel can make fuel difficult to track. Manual records provide limited visibility and may not identify unusual activity until after the fuel is gone.

PETRO’s iPETRO fuel management eco-system helps operations take greater control of every litre.

Depending on the site configuration, authorised users and vehicles can be identified, dispensing transactions recorded and tank levels monitored. Information can then be brought together through the iPETRO VMI platform, giving operational teams clearer reporting and oversight without requiring someone to be physically present at each installation.

This visibility can support more accurate fuel reconciliation, better stock planning and earlier identification of unusual consumption or fuel activity.

More importantly, the technology does notneed to sit separately from the infrastructure. PETRO can integrate fuel storage, dispensing, tank gauging and management technology around the way each site operates.

The result is not simply more data. It is better information for faster, more confident decision-making.

Infrastructure designed around the operation

Fuel demand, available space, equipment access, environmental conditions and future expansion all influence what a successful fuel installation should look like.

PETRO supplies a broad range of self-bunded tanks, from compact and transportable units through to high-capacity containerised fuel storage systems. Tanks can be configured with pumps, filtration, metering, hose management, tank gauging and fuel management equipment to meet specific operational requirements.

Where a standard package is not the right fit, PETRO’s in-house design, engineering and fabrication capabilities allow a solution to be developed around the project.

For projects with temporary or changing requirements, PETRO’s growing hire fleet, including fuel tanks, dispensing equipment and associated infrastructure, can be mobilised for shutdowns, temporary works, changing production demands and urgent projects without requiring an immediate capital purchase.

Expanding site safety capability

PETRO’s new emergency shower and eye-wash station has been developed for remote sites where immediate access to reliable emergency response equipment is essential.

The self-contained unit features a 1200L insulated tank and delivers a continuous flow of 75L/m for 15 minutes. Solar-powered operation enables the station to function away from permanent power infrastructure, while visible status lighting and integrated alarms support site awareness and emergency response.

The station includes a full-body emergency shower, integrated eyewash, forklift pockets and a lockable maintenance area. Remote monitoring capability provides an additional layer of oversight by helping responsible personnel monitor readiness and receive activation alerts.

One partner across the project life cycle

Since 2010, PETRO Industrial has supported Australian businesses with fuel storage and dispensing solutions. Today, its capability extends across the complete lifecycle of a project — from design and engineering through to installation, commissioning, fuel management, fuel quality, servicing and ongoing maintenance.

With operations in Brisbane and Perth, PETRO is continuing to strengthen its ability to support mining customers across Australia.

For mine operators, the advantage lies in having fewer gaps between systems and fewer suppliers working independently.

In an industry where downtime is expensive and remote conditions leave little room for error, supplying equipment is only the beginning.

The real goal is to create safer, smarter and more reliable operations — protecting the fuel, the equipment and, most importantly, the people who keep Australian mining moving.
