Redefining heavy component handling

Redefining heavy component handling

In heavy industry, maintenance teams are constantly balancing safety, productivity and the practical challenges of handling large and awkward components. For Australian manufacturer Nivek Industries, addressing those challenges has been central to the development of its maintenance equipment. The company’s latest-generation Big TED platform is designed to take that approach a step further.

A 3-tonne tracked elevating platform, Big TED has been purpose-built for heavy mobile plant maintenance. Rather than simply lifting a component, it is designed to support the complete handling process, allowing heavy loads to be lifted, transported and precisely positioned while keeping personnel clear of the load wherever possible.

Its tracked undercarriage enables movement through workshops and maintenance areas, while independent electric drive motors provide smooth, precise control. Integrated side shift and a powered turntable allow operators to make the controlled adjustments often required when removing or installing heavy components.

Following a significant upgrade to its software, control system and internal components, the latest generation Big TED has been engineered with reliability, simplified maintenance and long-term serviceability in mind. An upgraded user interface provides operators with real-time machine information, while detailed diagnostic capabilities assist maintenance personnel with fault finding and servicing.

Perhaps most importantly, the new generation introduces an advanced smart attachment interface. Powered attachments can identify themselves to Big TED and communicate the functions they require, allowing them to be controlled through the machine’s remote transmitter without requiring changes to core software whenever a new attachment is introduced.

This creates a platform that can evolve alongside the needs of mining maintenance teams. Nivek is initially developing a multipurpose fuel and hydraulic tank handling attachment and an accumulator handling attachment for haul trucks, targeting tasks where conventional handling methods can expose workers to unnecessary physical and operational risks.

One application that demonstrates the value of Big TED was the removal and replacement of an aluminium digester pot during a major maintenance activity.

Traditionally, the task required personnel to work near and underneath the pot during removal, exposing them to the risk of sharp scale and debris falling from the equipment. By utilising Big TED to support, lower and manoeuvre the pot, personnel were able to remain clear of this hazard for a greater portion of the task. In addition to the safety improvement, the use of Big TED reduced the time required to complete the operation by about 50%.With downtime for this particular operation valued at a six-figure cost per hour, the reduction in maintenance time delivered a significant financial benefit. The cost saving achieved by halving the downtime was sufficient to effectively pay for the Big TED after a single operation. For Nivek, this is only the beginning. The company intends to continue working closely with customers to identify maintenance challenges where new attachments can provide additional safety and efficiency benefits. Big TED represents a shift in thinking, from equipment designed for a single lifting task to a versatile maintenance platform capable of evolving with the industry. By combining remote operation, precise positioning and intelligent attachments, Nivek is demonstrating that improved safety and improved productivity can be achieved together.
