Weir awarded $102m (£53m) redefined flowsheet contract for Reko Diq greenfield copper-gold project in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province

The first call-off order of $50m (£26m), which includes both ENDURON® large format High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) and wet screens, will be recognised in Q3 with the remaining orders booked later in 2024 and early 2025. Weir Group (Weir), a global mining technology leader, has been awarded the contract to provide industry-leading energy efficient, sustainable solutions to the Reko Diq copper-gold project, a 50% owned greenfield development by Barrick Gold Corporation (Barrick). The tier one copper project is located in the Chagai district of Balochistan and is targeting first production in 2028 with an estimated mine life of more than 40 years. A high-tech research project between Bravus Mining and Resources and Queensland scientists has created a new model to uncover the secrets of rare bird species. The joint project with researchers from ecology consultancy E2M has provided new information about the habitat and daily movements of the black-throated finch, using an AI-supported radio tracking program. Barrick boosts dividends after record quarter

Barrick Mining raised its dividend and buyback program following a stronger profit estimate than expected in Q3 CY25. The miner increased its share buyback program by $765.67m (US$500m) to $2.3b (US$1.5b). This comes off the back of a tumultuous year for Barrick with the $1.53b (US$1b) write-off of its Loulo-Gounkoto gold mine in Mali and the exit of chief executive Mark Bristow earlier this year. Despite the ongoing dispute, the miner generated $6.28b (US$4.1b) in revenue, as well as a record $3.68b (US$2.4b) in operating cash flow backed by surging gold prices. By Rachel Seeley A miner trapped 300m underground at Newcrest Mining’s Gosowong gold mine in Indonesia has been freed, eight nights after a “geotechnical event” caused damage to the site. Pak Mursalim Sahman was rescued via a 38m bore hole drilled from an existing tunnel above where he was trapped. He was taken to the Gosowong medical centre and would be reunited with his wife and children.
