BHP faces first Pilbara strike in decades

Two engineering students from Curtin University have received a significant boost to help with their studies, thanks to the Alcoa (ASX: AAI) Bev Corless Women in Engineering Scholarship program. The scholarships have been announced in recognition of International Women in Engineering Day on June 23, 2025. Ayesha Wasim and Jorja Hinson-Tolchard will each receive $20,000 in funding to assist with their engineering studies over the next two years, while also gaining the opportunity to complete work experience at Alcoa’s bauxite mines and alumina refineries south of Perth, WA. Ground has been broken on upgrades to support the Pilbara Hydrogen Hub at Port Hedland in WA. The upgrades to the Lumsden Point access road and Pinga Street intersection will support the import of wind turbine and renewable energy components into the Pilbara, as well as the export of battery metals such as lithium and copper concentrates. The new intersection is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at Lumsden Point and Pinga Street, while also facilitating the safe movement of oversize vehicles out of Lumsden Point. Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) has released its Q4 CY24 production results, with copper and bauxite operations driving consistent performance and profitable growth. Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm says the company is making strong progress in delivering organic growth from its major projects. “The Oyu Tolgoi underground copper mine in Mongolia continues to successfully ramp up, while the Simandou high-grade iron ore project in Guinea and our Western Range mine in the Pilbara are on schedule for first production this year,” he said. “Significant milestones were achieved at our Rincon project in Argentina during the quarter, with first lithium delivered and receipt of Board approval to expand the operation, demonstrating both our operational capabilities and ambition to grow in battery…

Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) has announced its plans for two new 5.25MW solar farms for the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory. Construction will begin in July 2024, with completion scheduled for early 2025. Aggreko will construct, own and operate the solar farms for Rio Tinto for up to 10 years. The solar farms will be built on Rio Tinto leases, following agreement with the Gumatj and Rirratjingu Traditional Owner Groups, and will help transition to a low-carbon future after mining operations cease towards the end of the decade.
