A contract worker has died following an incident at Rio Tinto’s (ASX: RIO) SimFer mine at the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea.

The incident occurred on Saturday and work at the site has since been suspended.

Since October 2024, at least two fatalities involving contract workers have been reported at the project.

Rio Tinto chief executive Simon Trott says the company is providing its full support and will work with relevant authorities, partners and contractors to complete a thorough investigation.

“I will be travelling to Guinea this week to be with our team on the ground,” he said.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of everyone who works with us. We are determined to learn from this incident and to do everything we can to provide the safest possible workplace and prevent tragedies like this from happening.”

Support, including counselling, is being provided to impacted team members according to Rio Tinto.
