Dredging work begins at Lumsden Point

Dredging has begun at Lumsden Point in the Port of Port Hedland, with around 1m cubic metres of material to be removed over the next eight weeks.
The dredging will create a deeper access channel, swing basin and berth pockets to ensure the safe and efficient berthing of vessels at the new Lumsden Point facility.
Earlier this year, Jan De Nul was awarded the contract for this work, with extensive preparatory works already completed and the JFJ De Nul cutter suction dredge arriving in Port Hedland earlier this week.
To minimise the risk on impact to surrounding habitats, environmental monitoring is also being undertaken.
WA Ports, Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael says its fantastic to see the progress being made.
“The commencement of the dredging and reclamation works represents a significant milestone in the project’s advancement which will help diversify trade in the Pilbara,” he said.
“Upon completion, Lumsden Point is expected to boost Australia’s gross domestic product by $2.1b per annum.
“It is expected to save 3.6mt of emission by 2055 by supporting direct shipping to the Pilbara and providing a pathway for renewable energy infrastructure.”
Lumsden Point will facilitate the export of battery metals such as lithium and copper concentrates, the import of renewable energy infrastructure and support the growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara.
The Federal Government is investing $565m in port upgrades in the Pilbara, of which $450m will enable the development of new multi-user facilities and berths at Lumsden Point.
This is in partnership with the WA Government, which is contributing $96.6m to the project.
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King commented on the funding.
“The Federal Government is delivering $565m in common user port upgrades in the Pilbara to help unlock trade and investment opportunities and support a future made in Australia,” she said.
“This project is all about investment in quality infrastructure which encourages and supports opportunities for local businesses and communities.”
