Rio Tinto’s (ASX: RIO) Diavik diamond mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada has seen its final day of production after 23 years of operation.The mine which has produced more than 150 million carats of rough diamonds was discovered in 1991 beneath Lac de Gras, 220km south of the Arctic Circle.Mining began in 2003, utilising both open pit and underground mining methods to produce predominantly white gem quality diamonds and a small proportion of rare yellow diamonds.A celebration at the mine was attended by Indigenous Government Organisations, government representatives and other stakeholders to signal the formal completion of production.Diavik chief operating officer Matthew Breen says this milestone reflects the significance of the operation in the region.“Diavik has been an inspired collaboration between a modern mining company and Indigenous partners with an enduring legacy of socioeconomic benefits for the North” he said.“We look forward to continuing to respectfully reclaim the land in line with our commitments to, and in partnership with, the Government of the Northwest Territories and Indigenous partners.”Planning for closure has been underway since before production began, with closure objectives covering safety, land use, landforms, water and biodiversity and community capacity.Closure activities will extend to 2029, followed by a period of post-closure monitoring.Rio Tinto says the rough diamonds from the final production phase will be polished and sold through 2026 and beyond via its global customer network.

The Queensland Government has launched a 10% subsidy on below-rail access charges for the next four years for users of the Mount Isa line in an effort to support industry and strengthen freight corridors.The Mount Isa line is a strategic freight corridor connecting the north-west minerals province (NWMP) to the Port of Townsville, playing a critical role in keeping exports moving.According to the Queensland Government, lowering rail transport costs will enable significant cost savings for operators within the region. For example, a rail user moving .5mtpa of minerals concentrates in a bulk operation between Cloncurry and Townsville would save about $1.4m annually and $5.6m over the four years, says the Queensland Government.Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg says the four-year subsidy is about backing the industries that keep the state moving by delivering practical support they can rely on.“By lowering rail transport costs, we’re making rail a more competitive option for industry, improving freight corridors and supporting growth across the NWMP,” he said.“We know transport costs can be a real pressure on industry in the north and this subsidy will encourage a shift from road to rail, improving safety on our roads and strengthening long-term freight resilience.”Minerals concentrate, fertiliser, acid, mining inputs, refined metals and cattle are all moved along the Mount Isa line.Queensland Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last says the Queensland Government is serious about unlocking the full potential of Queensland’s north-west.“Queensland’s resources are world-class, and demand is strong, with the elevating phosphate to  list of critical minerals late last year,” he said.“But to meet that demand, we need to get our resources to the coast, and that’s where the Government’s Mount Isa rail subsidy kicks in.“The Mount Isa line is the backbone of the north-west economy, moving mineral concentrates, processed metals, fertilisers, phosphate rock and acid to export markets.”

Liberty Bell Bay in Tasmania, one of billionaire Sanjeev Gupta’s last remaining Australian assets, has entered voluntary administration.The Tasmanian Government is actively engaging with the appointed administrators, receivers and key stakeholders to follow developments at the smelter and its implications to the state.In early March, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) lodged an application to the Supreme Court of NSW to wind up operations at Liberty Bell Bay following its failures to lodge annual financial reports for five consecutive years.The smelter has been operating at a limited capacity since May despite being granted a $20m loan from the Tasmanian Government in August to purchase 48,000t of ore to facilitate its restart.In late January, the Tasmanian Government confirmed that Liberty Bell Bay had repeatedly defaulted on repayments and breached the loan agreement terms.Tasmanian Business, Industry and Resources Minister Felix Ellis says the news will be difficult for workers, their families and the local community who have already endured prolonged uncertainty.“GFG has failed to deliver on its commitments to restart operations and provide certainty to Tasmanians,” he said.“We understand that administrators have been appointed with the intention of stabilising the business and testing the market for a potential sale or recapitalisation.“We will carefully consider all available options, with a clear focus on securing the best possible outcome for workers, the Bell Bay region and Tasmania’s industrial future.”Liberty Bell Bay is the latest in a trail of resource assets led by Mr Gupta across Australia that have fallen into administration.In February, Mr Gupta placed Tahmoor coal mine into voluntary administration in an effort to prevent creditors, led by Coal Mines Insurance (CMI), from forcing liquidation of the asset over unpaid insurance claims.In 2025, the South Australian Government forced Whyalla Steelworks’ operator OneSteel Manufacturing into administration to avoid it becoming “irredeemable” under Mr Gupta who was the previous owner.

Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) posted a 9% year-on-year increase in copper equivalent production and its second-highest Q1 Pilbara iron ore production since 2018, up 13% year-on-year.The miner said the quarter was impacted by two cyclones, while warning of growing uncertainty around supply chains and costs due to conflict in the Middle East.Rio Tinto recorded an 8mt impact to iron ore shipments from Tropical Cyclones Mitchell and Narelle and a .9mt impact to bauxite production from Cyclone Narelle.Rio Tinto chief executive Simon Trott comments on the Q1 results.“Operating excellence drove 9% YoY copper equivalent1 production growth across our portfolio as the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine continues to ramp up as planned and our integrated aluminium business, again, delivered a strong performance,” he said.“Our Pilbara iron ore mines performed strongly, while shipments were impacted by two cyclones in the quarter.“We achieved the historic land exchange at Resolution Copper, with our project team focused on unlocking the next phase of one of the world’s largest untapped copper deposits.“The unmatchable mix and scale of our portfolio has ensured growth and supply chain resilience against changing operating conditions as we continue to closely monitor the evolving situation in the Middle East.”Rio Tinto says the impacts of the Middle East conflict have been limited on the supply-side while commodity prices have responded favourably.Iron ore, copper and lithium operations remained largely unaffected.As for fuel, Rio says higher diesel prices steepened its cost curve while higher jet fuel prices did not disrupt the business.Fatal incidents at Simandou and Kennecott led to both operations shutting down during the quarter. The operations were progressively restarted once conditions allowed.“Safety is the foundation of our business,” Mr Trott said.“The tragic loss of two colleagues this year, at Simandou and Kennecott, is a stark reminder that we must ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of every shift.”A staged restart at the Kennecott underground project commenced April 16.
