WorkSafe has started an investigation into a work-related death at a mine site near Wiluna in WA’s Goldfields-Esperance region.

WorkSafe investigators from Perth and WorkSafe Mines Safety inspectors from Kalgoorlie are attending the site, 900km north-east of Perth.

WorkSafe commissioner Sally North extended her sincere condolences to the man’s family, friends and colleagues.

WorkSafe was unable to provide further details as its enquiries are ongoing.

An environmental impact statement has been submitted to the Environmental Impact Assessment System to advance the “implementation of the mining truck electrification system in Escondida Norte project”. This seeks to assist the movement of this equipment inside the mine by means of a trolley system. Work includes the construction of a new electrical substation and transmission lines both inside and around the Escondida Norte pit. EMERGING West African gold developer Papillon Resources will proceed with its flagship Fekola project in Mali, after securing a mining permit from the Malian Government. The mining licence is valid for 30 years and covers the complete 75 square kilometre area of the Fekola exploration permit, on the border of south-western Mali. The mining permit, in conjunction with the company’s existing environmental permit (awarded in April 2013), is the final milestone permit required for the mine development. The document was granted following a recommendation to the government by the Malian Ministry of Industry and Mines. Metso divests its ferrous business

Metso has signed an agreement to sell its ferrous business to SMS group, a global company providing technology and services in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the metals industry. Some of the businesses to be divested include travelling grate pelletising and CircoredTM direct reduction process, as well as the related service business. About 180 employees, primarily based in Germany, India and China, are planned to join the SMS group at the closing of the transaction.
