A REVOLUTIONARY new filter produced by Metso offers exciting potential to maximise water recovery and re-use in mines, making dry stacking of tailings more feasible than ever for companies.

Driven by the growing volume of tailings which have led to recent catastrophic dam failures, as well as overall and increasing scarcity of water, the mining industry is seeking sustainable solutions and strategies to address the rising risks and costs, compliances and increasing global resource footprints.

While it is well-known that the risk of tailings dam failure could be completely avoided by dewatering and dry stacking the tailings, accomplishing the task has not been easy with a lack of available technology.

Enter the Metso VPX filter, which has proven to provide up to 90pc water recovery and less than 7pc moisture content to the materials that pass through.

Offeing a solution for the future and beyond, the VPX filter is the smartest and safest solution to all challenges that mines are facing with tailings, and indeed there is hardly any material that is too tough for the unit to handle.

High capacity

The Metso VPX filter has been designed from the ground up for an increased capacity providing up to 36m³ volume and a 1391m² filtration area.

This filter has the fastest opening and closing time, also known as short technical time, out of all the top filters in the mining industry.

The cycle time and pressure can also be easily adjusted depending on the different conditions of the ores, while the pressure and the number of chambers have increased, with lesser maintenance needed, which are factors that contribute to higher capacity and availability as well.

 Modular and multi-action

The Metso VPX filter has a compact design that has an offering for an upscale modular potential.

This new technology in the VPX filter has proven to be adaptive to handle any range of difficulty of material with up to 25 bars of operating pressure.

The filter design and technology provides comfort that as conditions and ores change, the results will not.

In comparison to Metso’s VPA filter, there has been up to twice the speed increase.

Smart control system

The filter comes with a load cell weighing system integrated to a control system for optimum performance, which provides a self-adjusting filter providing an easier operation and less employee risk because of automation.

Increased safety

Safety is always a huge concern for any mining operation and is a priority to sustain high safety levels.

The Metso VPX filter has a fully electronic mechanical system with no hydraulics, which will create reduced noise pollution and lowered risks compared to a filter with hydraulics.

A Metso Hydroclone.

Hydroclones

High level wet classification in mining is necessary for efficient size control of particles finer than 1mm in water.

There are different methods of wet classification, but when the particles size range is 100-10 micron, hydrocyclones are the optimal choice.

Wet classification when using hydrocyclones uses separation by centrifugal force covering a size (mass) range of 100-10 microns.

High mass particles closer to the outer wall report to the underflow, and lower mass particles closer to the center report to the overflow.

Metso MHC Series hydrocyclones patent-pending design represents the next generation of hydrocyclones, equipped with world-class technology and several innovative features, the new range of hydrocyclones offers significant product advantages in comparison to other hydrocyclones.

They are built to provide a solution to diverse needs, a balanced grinding circuit and overall plant performance.

High capacity

The hydrocyclones inlet head design was developed in coordination with Metso’s simulation and modeling scientists using the latest CFD-DEM software available.

The inlet head design allows for smoother flow of material into the hydrocyclone for increased unit capacity, with increased unit capacity combined with minimal turbulence creating a higher throughput wet classification process.

Increased uptime

The hydrocyclones drive maximum uptime along with decreasing operational costs (OPEX), with flow rate creating an optimal flow even with given pressure drops.

Wear resistant liners are also incorporated for an increased uptime and extended the lifecycle of the parts overall.

With the single component conical section, the hydrocyclone provides an ease of maintenance reducing downtime.

The liner changes out are quick, safe and easy due to the simple design and limited number of parts. Simplicity of the hydrocyclone brings increased uptime and reduced costs.

Exceptional separation efficiency

The MHCs provide accurate and efficient separation of particles by size (mass).

Radical manifolds accurately distribute the feed and collect the underflow and overflow from multiple hydrocyclones operating in parallel.

Wear-resistant linings are incorporated into the feed distributor producing minimal turbulence for the underflow and overflow launders, the unique conical geometry providing a smooth acceleration of particles to promote a sharp particle separation for a lower cost.

Diverse applications

The hdrocyclones fit into various applications and fulfills diverse needs. Specific applications where the MHC Series performs best are grinding circuit classification, and anywhere from primary to fine grinding for a full range of minerals.

The broad product offering of hydrocyclone sizes bring increased efficiency and profitability, with.each model possessing a range of vortex finder and apex inserts to fine tune wet classification performance.
