Bowen Rail Company is revving up as the new naming rights sponsor of the Whitsunday’s favourite event, the 2024 Don River Dash off-road race. The Don River Dash 300 is a two-day off-road race that sees motorbikes, buggies and trophy trucks tackle a rugged “desert style” course through the dry riverbed of Bowen’s famous Don River. The event injects more than $4m into the local economy as thousands of competitors and motorsport enthusiasts from across Australia descend on Bowen and the Whitsundays each September. UGL unlocks $150m in contracts

CIMIC Group company UGL has been awarded several new contracts and contract extensions with existing WA clients: Alcoa (ASX: AAI), bp, Chevron and Woodside (ASX: WDX). UGL has been awarded a contract with Chevron Australia for construction services, supporting the installation of modules, equipment, structure, piping and electrical and instrumentation works. Additionally, UGL has received an 11-month contract extension for the supply of services to Alcoa’s mining and refining operations in WA for the continued management and execution of mechanical, electrical and access services for maintenance work. Bravus blooms little green thumbs in Bowen community

The Bowen Rail Company (BRC) is supporting the Queensland region’s littlest green thumbs through a grant to the Queens Beach State School kitchen garden program. The Bowen state school was one of four recipients of the latest round of funding from BRC’s Community Partnership Program, designed to assist not-for-profit organisations and community groups with the purchase of small assets that can make a big difference. Queens Beach is part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and teacher Bec Trask says the children learn about food through hands-on gardening, harvesting, and cooking. “Thanks to the grant we’ve been able to expand the garden and have a bigger variety of fruit and vegetables for the kids to cook with,’’ she said.…

Weir secures $48m contract for new phase of greenfield phosphate projects

The Weir Group has been awarded a $48m (£25m) contract for separation solutions at the OCP Group’s Benguerir and Louta greenfield phosphate projects in Morocco. The full order, which includes a range of both WARMAN slurry pumps and CAVEX hydrocyclones, will be recognised in Q3 of 2024. This will support the continued construction of the Louta project and the tripling of production from the Benguerir project, where Weir has previously provided similar separation and desliming solutions based on its energy efficient technology. First ferrotungsten produced in Vietnam

FIRST ferrotungsten was lifted at Asia Tungsten Products Company’s (ATC) ferrotungsten project in Vietnam during April, with first sales revenue expected to follow in coming weeks. A subsidiary of Hazelwood Resources, ATC began hot commissioning at the start of April and its furnace is now performing to expectation. The facility is the largest ferrotungsten plant outside of China and, according to Hazelwood, is the most advanced in the world. Outside of China there is limited production capacity for the master alloy, which is used in the production of high-speed steels, tool steels and temperature resistant alloys. ALLEGED corruption in the Doyles Creek exploration licence approval process is being investigated by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), with the possibility of charges for those involved. Disgraced former NSW Mining minister Ian Macdonald was in charge of the license, approved in December 2008 and granted without competitive tender to former union associate John Maitland against departmental advice. According to The Australian, the granting of the mining exploration licence delivered Mr Maitland and his associates a $48 million profit from the sale to NuCoal, after only investing $165,000. Mr Macdonald’s former chief of staff Jamie Gibson told the ICAC the approval process was unusual, The Australian reported. “He wanted it done quickly and he wanted it done in-house,”…

A doubling of iron ore prices helped BHP swing back into profit for the second half of 2016. By Cameron Drummond BHP has reported a half year profit of $US3.2 billion, facilitated by a broad-trend commodity price resurgence and operational cost reductions. Results from the world’s biggest miner were slightly better than analysts’ expectations of $US3.1bn. Its underlying profit for H2 2016 surged to $US3.2bn from $US412m year-on-year due to higher than expected commodity prices and cost reductions across its operations.
