THE process of thermal spraying involves a metal or ceramic coating being sprayed onto the surface of another material to prepare the base surface for the application of a final coating that will provide corrosion protection.

As part of the international Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) initiative, McElligott Partners was asked to develop a Thermal Spray Aluminium (TSA) project scope and quality management system. The system was designed for use in CUI remedial works on process piping, and vessels on live units at refineries and workshop facilities.

McElligott Partners’ TSA ‘bible’ was launched in September 2010 with full Shell Global Solutions International B.V. approval. Through the system, McElligott Partners aimed to provide applicators with the knowledge to apply TSA safely within a petrochemical environment. It was the first time in the history of the Australian petrochemical industry that such approval had been granted to an Australian protective coating contractor.

The program includes training, certification and technical support through alliance partners MSSA and Metallization Ltd UK.

WITH more than 50 years of experience, McElligott Partners has grown to become one of the largest privately owned industrial blasting and protective coatings contractors in the Australian industry.

Continually involved in the development of new technology, including high performance robotics equipment for use with specialised coatings and linings, the company provides long-term corrosion protection for steel and concrete surfaces in applications with extremely aggressive environments such as wastewater facilities, mines, offshore rigs, and oil and gas plants.

“We are confident that given the opportunity, we can bring the necessary expertise and experience to meet our clients’ requirements,” McElligott business development manager David Walker said.

The company aims to provide consistent service and quality and is committed to establishing and maintaining long-term business relationships.

McElligott has completed work on more major projects – such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Kangaroo Valley pipeline, both in NSW – with a higher cumulative value than any other contractor in Australia.

“We believe that the recipe for success is a well trained and equipped workforce, working as a team,” Mr Walker said.

The company is a member of several industry bodies including The Society for Protective Coating (USA) and the Australasian Corrosion Association.

McElligott is accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and AS 4801 standards in addition to Level 5 of the Painting Contractors Certification Program.
