Liebherr has unveiled more than 10 machines from its earthmoving and mining product segments at the steinexpo 2023, held in Homberg in central Germany, from 23-26 August.

The machines formed part of the static exhibition, the live demonstration site and the 1,200 m2 Liebherr pavilion.

Liebherr’s machine highlights included the:

  • Robust TA 230 Litronic articulated dump truck for tough use in the mining industry and overburden transport;
  • Improved crawler excavators R 992 and R 978 SME of the new 70-100t machines and the mining excavator R 9150 for demanding projects in the mining industry;
  • L 546 and L 586 XPower® wheel loaders as well as dozers PR 756 and PR 726with assistance systems for more power and safety

The company also showcased its alternative drive capabilities: from the conventional combustion engine to hydrogen-based drives and electric drives.

Digitalisation in the field of earthmoving and mining machines was also on display at the event by way of digital assistance systems and virtual product simulations.

Alternative drive technologies for the extraction industry

Liebherr presented its work on electric and hydrogen-based drives, with a focus on machines in the extraction industry.

The company believes there are plenty of opportunities for hydrogen-based drives in heavy-duty applications.

The use of low-emission alternative fuels, such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) are already used in the majority of Liebherr machines.

Liebherr’s first hydrogen combustion engine

The H966, based on port fuel injection technology (also known as PFI), was developed by the Components product segment for demonstration and field trials.

The results achieved using this technology showed the great future potential of hydrogen-based drives, especially for off-road applications.

The engine was first demonstrated at Bauma 2022 in the R 9XX H2, a hydrogen excavator prototype.

Liebherr also presenting an innovative solution for the mobile refuelling of construction machinery with gaseous hydrogen, together with Maximator Hydrogen GmbH.
