Seeding sustainability
The combination of fluctuating weather patterns and soil erosion caused by large-scale infrastructure projects can drastically reshape the local terrain and environment in which works are carried out. If appropriate environmental management solutions like erosion, sedimentation control and revegetation initiatives are not implemented, the long-term survival of the land becomes a genuine concern.
South East Queensland company, Gracie Contracting, has risen to the challenge, offering new ways to address erosion and sedimentation in mining, road, rail and residential development projects.
As experts in soil stabilisation, the company works closely with the private sector and Government agencies to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution for large-scale revegetation projects, erosion control, and land rehabilitation.
“Our team specialises in applying custom seed and mulch mixtures to suit various terrains, including steep slopes, large construction sites, and hard-to-reach areas,” said Director Mathew Gracie.
“With our state-of-the-art equipment and advanced hydroseeding techniques, we ensure fast germination, soil stabilisation, and long-term environmental sustainability. We aim to provide high-quality innovative solutions that are tailored to each client’s needs and ensure all services are delivered with integrity and professionalism.”
Hydromulching is a cornerstone of Gracie Contracting’s services. It’s a fast, effective revegetation method involving the agitation of mulch, fertiliser, seed and a binding agent, then hydraulically applying the mixture directly onto target areas. Once applied, the slurry mixture provides a fixed permeable layer to protect the soil, while allowing rainfall infiltration until the vegetation establishes, which decreases erosion and sedimentation runoff into natural environments.
Although the same concept as hydromulching, the company’s hydroseeding service applies a mixture of seed, water, fertiliser, and dye onto prepared soil surfaces through a cannon or hose on top of topsoil. Hydroseeding is particularly effective for covering expansive areas faster than drill, direct or broadcast seeding, and is often used on flat terrains where erosion is less of a concern. The use of native species as well as cover crops can also be utilised throughout this process.
Gracie Contracting also recognise the environmental and operational challenges posed by dust, particularly in areas where soil has been disturbed or exposed.
“We offer innovative dust suppression technologies that are designed to prevent dust at its source to protect the health and safety of workers and nearby communities,” said Gracie.
“These dust control solutions are ideal for construction, mining, civil sites, and landowners managing degraded or exposed landscapes. They are not only environmentally-friendly, but ensure compliance with environmental standards while improving air quality in and around project sites.”
