North Queensland exports power Queensland’s prosperity

A new report has highlighted the multi-billion-dollar contribution the North Queensland Export Terminal (NQXT) north of Bowen in North Queensland makes to local, state and national economies. North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) commissioned the study to examine the economic and social impact of three Queensland east coast ports it is port authority for — Hay Point, Mackay and Abbot Point. The North Queensland Export Terminal is located within the Port of Abbot Point. The study found activity at the Port of Abbot Point contributed almost $10b to the Queensland economy each year and supported more than 8000 jobs across the mining, construction, transport and wholesale trade industries. CIMIC Group company UGL has been awarded several new contracts and contract extensions with existing WA clients: Alcoa (ASX: AAI), bp, Chevron and Woodside (ASX: WDX). UGL has been awarded a contract with Chevron Australia for construction services, supporting the installation of modules, equipment, structure, piping and electrical and instrumentation works. Additionally, UGL has received an 11-month contract extension for the supply of services to Alcoa’s mining and refining operations in WA for the continued management and execution of mechanical, electrical and access services for maintenance work. Australian manganese explorer, Black Canyon Limited (ASX:BCA), has announced results from the recent reverse circulation (RC) drill program at the Flanagan Bore Manganese Project. Systematic drilling along a 2,000m long target located between the FB3 and LR1 deposits discovered significant zones of manganese mineralisation. Black Canyon said there was high-potential to expand the global Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) at Flanagan Bore beyond the current 104Mt @ 10.5% Mn (Indicated) containing 11Mt of manganese. COPPER has hit a three-month high on the London Metal Exchange, reaching its highest price in two months after a long run of losing sessions. The metal closed 1.9pc higher due to the fears of copper smelters in China reducing output by as much as 15pc as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. Concerns over short supplies of refined metals spurred the higher prices, amid transport restrictions from China. China issued import quotas for another 4620t of high-grade copper scrap and 1440t of aluminium scrap for use in 2020. BHP achieves annual production records across operations

Mining conglomerate BHP (ASX:BHP) has achieved annual production records at Western Australia iron ore (WAIO), Spence and Olympic Dam for the 2023 financial year. For the year, WAIO produced 285Mt of iron ore, the Spence mine in Chile produced 240,000t of copper and Olympic Dam produced 212,000t of copper and 186,000oz of refined gold. As a result, full-year production guidance was achieved for copper, iron ore, metallurgical coal and energy coal, while nickel achieved revised guidance and finished in line within the lower end of the original guidance.
