Bowen Rail Company is revving up as the new naming rights sponsor of the Whitsunday’s favourite event, the 2024 Don River Dash off-road race. The Don River Dash 300 is a two-day off-road race that sees motorbikes, buggies and trophy trucks tackle a rugged “desert style” course through the dry riverbed of Bowen’s famous Don River. The event injects more than $4m into the local economy as thousands of competitors and motorsport enthusiasts from across Australia descend on Bowen and the Whitsundays each September. A feasibility study of Pilbara Minerals’ advanced Tabba Tabba tantalum project near Port Hedland indicates “robust” project viability through low capital and mining costs. The company is now on track to join the ranks of junior miners, with first production forecast for the third quarter of 2014, subject to project funding. The study defined an initial mine life of 19 months producing about 365,000 pounds of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), within a minimum 5 per cent Ta2O5 concentrate, delivering earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $16 million. GOLD and copper explorer GBM Resources has announced two milestones for its Milo rare earth elements project in Mt Isa, North West Queensland. A major upgrade of the total rare earth element and yttrium oxides (TREEYO) resource has been completed, and the production of a large concentration of TREEYO through heavy medium separation and metallurgical test work is underway. The Milo project area has grown to more than 1km in length, with the inferred resource increasing to 187 million tonnes containing 113,000t of rare earth oxides. The Milo resource is now 200m wide and contains elements that are considered to be in undersupply, including neodymium and dysprosium. Canadian gold miner rejects “hostile” takeover bid

CANADIAN precious metals company Osisko Mining has formally rejected a “hostile” takeover bid by fellow Canadian gold producer Goldcorp, labelling the move ‘opportunistic” and “inadequate”. In mid January, Vancouver-based Goldcorp announced it had placed an offer to acquire all outstanding common shares from Osisko, filing a takeover bid circular document with Canadian securities regulators and the US Securities Exchange Commission. Under the terms of the offer, Osisko shareholders would have received 0.146 of a Goldcorp common share, plus CAD$2.26 in cash for each Osisko common share tendered.
