Women make up only 22% of the global mining workforce, a traditionally male-dominated sector, according to the World Economic Forum.

A new film series called Unstoppable has been launched by leading global technology company ABB to highlight three inspiring female leaders in the mining, pulp and paper and metals industries to break down these barriers and promote diversity.

ABB Process Industries global head of communications Joanne Woo says Unstoppable showcases the incredible achievements of women in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industry.

“There are many dynamic career paths open to women,” she said. “Raising the visibility of women in industry is vital in breaking down gender stereotypes and showcasing inspiring role models. Through our series we aim to ignite a spark that will encourage others to join the movement towards a more diverse and inclusive workplace.”

ABB Process Industries president Joachim Braun says the company is committed to promoting equal opportunities for all.

“Our target is to double the representation of women in senior management positions at ABB by 2030,” he said. “Leadership must take responsibility for driving change in diversity and inclusion. It is not only a moral imperative but a business necessity. Leaders must actively work to hire, advance and support women in the workplace, and create a culture that empowers them to succeed.”

The first film in the series features Sappi chief information officer Marjorie Boles, a visionary in the pulp and paper industry who transformed her company through her passion for digitalization.

The second film profiles Copperstone Resources concentrating plant manager Tove Thelin Täckdal, a trailblazer in the mining industry who dedicated her career to promoting sustainability and innovation in the sector.

The final film highlights Tata Steel chief commercial for procurement Chithra Sharma, a pioneering leader in the metals industry who pushed boundaries and challenged the status quo to drive growth and competitiveness.

ABB’s Process Automation business is a leader in automation, electrification and digitalization for the process and hybrid industries.
