A new expert advisory panel has been established to advance green metals production in Australia.

Members of the green metals advisory panel were joined by Federal Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic for the first time to promote and accelerate greener metals manufacturing.

The panel offers decades of experience in metals industries, financing, research, decarbonisation and industrial workforce issues.

Members comprise of:

  • Australian Steel Institute chief executive Mark Cain
  • Australian Workers Union national secretary Paul Farrow
  • KPMG national managing partner Paul Howes
  • Australian Aluminium Council chief executive Marghanita Johnson
  • Australian Manufacturing Workers Union national secretary Steve Murphy
  • Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre chief executive Jenny Selway
  • Chamber of Minerals and Energy, WA, chief executive Rebecca Tomkinson

Minister Husic commented on the creation of the panel.

“This advisory panel boasts impressive expertise and longstanding experience, helping guide Australia to capture the new jobs and export opportunities that come with greener metals manufacturing,” he said.

“Shifting to greener metals production provides an opportunity for a sustainable future, to continue that rich legacy.”

Advice from the panel will complement views gathered from the green metals consultation which generated over 90 submissions from producers, peak bodies and researchers, amongst others.

The panel will provide independent advice to support the preparation of policy options on green metals and industry decarbonisation.

It will also help inform the Government’s net zero industrial plan to drive down emissions and support investment across the industrial sector.
