PLS launches hybrid truck trial with Switch

The project is part of PLS’ commitment to a sustainable energy future.

PLS (ASX: PLS) has partnered with WA-based innovation company Switch to develop and trial a hybrid diesel-electric truck.

Over the past year, both companies have worked together to develop a hybrid solution for PLS’ 150t class of haul trucks that meets operational requirements.

The resulting custom hybrid haul truck blends the reliability of diesel with the efficiency of electric vehicles. The haul truck is designed to reduce emissions, improve fuel performance and build internal capability at PLS as it continues its broader energy transition.

Full battery-electric haul trucks remain a long-term goal across the resources industry. With current infrastructure, technology and developing supply chains, hybrid vehicles offer a pathway towards meaningful progress today.

The current trials are focused on a 17-20% reduction in fuel use and improved speed and efficiency on haul routes.

PLS is gathering real-world data through the trial to improve understanding and requirements to bring the technology to scale across its fleet.

PLS operations executive general manager Brett McFadgen says Switch’s collaborative, solutions-based approach has been key to getting this concept off the ground.

“By supporting local innovation, we’re creating solutions that are scalable, relevant to our operations and environment, and ready for the challenges of tomorrow,” he said.

“This is what shaping tomorrow looks like in action.”

PLS continues to incorporate diesel alternatives and reduce emissions as part of its decarbonisation commitment.
