New figures show that the return to the community from Australia’s mining industry has again hit record levels with a combined $43.2 billion in company tax and royalties paid in financial year 2020-21, a 16 per cent increase from the $37.3 billion contributed in the previous period. Company taxes paid reached a new record high of $26.5 billion and royalties also reached a high of $16.7 billion in 2020-21 contributing significantly to federal, state and territory governments at a time when they needed it most during the COVID-19 pandemic. However this initiative is unlikely to address immediate needs. The industry is suffering from a dearth of quality tradespeople and skilled participants which is having a detrimental impact on costs and quality of output. Ninety-Seven per cent of Australian mining companies optimistic about the year ahead, according to research report The Equinix Mining Technology Report, a paper published today by Equinix, Inc., has revealed resounding optimism across the Australian mining, oil and gas industry. The report found that 97% per cent of the mining leaders interviewed are very optimistic about their prospects, with a quarter expecting sales revenue to grow between 20% and 50% in the next 12 months.
