Fortescue teams with Scania for autonomous mining road train, launches new Pilbara community funding

Scania and Fortescue (ASX: FMG) will jointly develop and validate a fully integrated autonomous road train solution for the iron ore miner’s Christmas Creek operation in WA.
With Scania’s technology in truck automation, the autonomous solution will be integrated with Fortescue’s Fleet Management System (FMS) to optimise fleet utilisation, maximise productivity, as well as ensure efficient fuel and energy consumption.
The solution will also integrate Scania’s onboard autonomation hardware and technology for the Scania R770 prime mover platform, coupled with three trailers weighing 120t with a payload of 24t.
While Scania Australia managing director Manfred Streit says this solution “will reduce the overall mining footprint”, Fortescue Metals chief executive Dino Otranto also comments on this partnership.
“Our deep expertise in autonomous haulage has enabled us to jointly develop a unique autonomous solution that unlocks high grade, satellite deposits for us to mine economically,” he said.
“This project will help us maximise productivity with unique low-cost solutions in our mining value chain.”
Scania Australia head of mining Robert Taylor says “their heavy haul trucks operate in an incredibly harsh environment”.
“The local and global mining specialists have devised a solution that will bring efficiency and safety,” he said.
Fortescue launches new Innovation Grants in the Pilbara
The global miner’s newly launched Fortescue Innovation Grants is offering up to $25,000 to communities in the Pilbara, WA, for projects that think outside the box and foster long-term, sustainable impacts.
Fortescue director approvals, communities and environment Warren Fish says organisations, both big and small, are encouraged to embrace innovative solutions that go beyond business as usual to create meaningful change in their communities.
“We’re looking for a range of ideas that reflect the resilience and resourcefulness of the Pilbara,” he said.
“Projects such as solar lighting, digital signage, sustainable living workshops and innovative programs are exactly the kind of initiatives we want to support.
“These grants are about empowering community organisations to achieve sustainable solutions that positively impact both their communities and the planet.”
Grants are available to eligible applicants to support innovative community projects within the council boundaries of the Town of Port Hedland, City of Karratha, Shire of Ashburton and Shire of East Pilbara.
