WA Premier takes green iron to Japan

Japan is aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, positioning WA to support the move with its energy exports.

WA Premier Roger Cook is travelling to Japan to support continued collaboration on the clean energy transition between the nation and WA.

Japan is a significant investor in WA with longstanding partnerships in the state’s resources sector. In a series of high-level meetings with government and industry stakeholders, Mr Cook will reinforce WA’s relationship with Japan.

An important discussion topic for the trip will be WA’s continued resources exports that will contribute to Japan’s energy transition. Opportunities for mutually beneficial co-operation across areas such as green iron, ammonia, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen are also a priority for discussions.

“Having face to face meetings with key Japanese Government and industry stakeholders affords us the opportunity to further strengthen the fantastic relationship WA and Japan have shared for so many years,” Mr Cook said.

“Japan has been a valued customer of Western Australian energy for decades.”

This will be Mr Cook’s first official visit to the country since his re-election earlier this year and reinforces WA’s position as a key supplier of low-emissions materials for the global energy transition.

“I am optimistic this will continue as we support their energy transition with liquid natural gas and pursue next generation fuels like hydrogen and ammonia,” Mr Cook said.

Japan is WA’s second largest trading partner, with bilateral trade worth $29.8b in 2024, and nearly 40 years of investor history in the state’s resources sector.
