From September 13 to 20, two Anglo American teams are set to compete at the 60th International Mines Rescue Competition in Colombia, Brazil.

In October 2023, the company’s team from the Grosvenor and Moranbah North mines won first and second place, respectively, at the competition.

This marks the third consecutive time the Moranbah North mine rescue team has competed at an international level, having previously competed in the US in 2022 and Russia in 2018.

The Grosvenor team debuted on the international stage in the US in 2022, with Colombia to be the team’s second competition.

Moranbah North mine team manager Ian Hawkins says the two teams have been training for months to ensure they were ready for the competition.

“Our team members come from all different places, roles and competencies within the mines so that adds to the value and diversity,” he said.

“They have a great rapport with each other but then they hit that switch, they’re on.

“If you’re ever in a bind, these are two quality teams our coal mine workers appreciate having as emergency support.”

The Moranbah North team will compete in the Queensland State Cup at Boonal on September 5 before flying to Colombia, while the Grosvenor members will fly out shortly after that.

Anglo American Australia chief executive Dan van der Westhuizen says it’s a great source of pride these two teams have gained global recognition.

“Our skilled mines rescue teams are a critical part of our continued commitment to the emergency capabilities of the Queensland coal mining industry,” he said.

“I hope more people will be inspired to volunteer with their local rescue teams to learn essential skills.

“Being prepared for emergency situations is crucial, whether at work or in the community.”

The competition concludes with an international mines rescue body conference on September 20.
