Battery systems are now in place at the Kwinana Battery Stage Two — a significant milestone for the WA State Government’s plan for cleaner, reliable and affordable energy.

Synergy has installed the containerised battery systems at what will become WA’s biggest grid-connected battery energy storage system, providing 200MW of power with 800MW of energy storage.

Once completed, the battery system will be capable of powering 37,000 homes across the State for around four hours.

Kwinana Battery Stage Two has already created more than 160 jobs during its current construction phase which is expected to be completed late 2024.

WA Premier Roger Cook commented on the milestone.

“The Kwinana Battery Stage Two is a key part of our energy transition, ensuring WA has cleaner, reliable and affordable energy in the future,” he said.

“These large-scale batteries allow us to pump more renewable energy into the grid while keeping our system stable — and it’s great to see this transition happening right in the heart of the Kwinana industrial strip.”

The Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System plays a crucial role in closing the State’s coal-fired power stations and achieving its 2030 emissions reduction targets.

Installation of the batteries comes as Synergy gears up to begin work in Collie on one of Australia’s biggest lithium-based batteries. Once built, the battery will provide 500MW of power with 2000MWh of energy storage.

WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby says the milestone is important in the State’s renewable energy revolution.

“This news marks an exciting milestone in Western Australia’s renewable energy revolution.

“Renewables uptake is surging in WA with the SWIS at times powered by more than 80% renewables.

“Through a major expansion of battery storage in WA, the Cook Government is ensuring the security and reliability of the State’s energy system.”
